My drill would max out at 3/8"- 16 or 24 pitch thread.
Is there a work around to utilize the slide hammer which requires 5/8 - 18.
Else, I will go shopping again SAT.

The slide hammer should have a bracket to grab smaller studs. or make your own slide hammer.
Use a long bolt and some washers along with a weight from any weight set or anything heavy with a hole in it. you only need a few inches of travel to let the weight build some inertia. When it hits its stop it transfers the energy.
Or tie a cable to it and use my patented " hey watch the fat guy fall down" system where I tie a rope or cable to the bolt and then around my self and either throw myself backwards or put my feet against the subframe and push .
Or put a towel around your bolt and use the 1/32 play you mentioned to allow you to slam it out by yanking it out then pushing back in (repeat).
Or just go buy a drill with a bit to fit the slide hammer. Faster but may be less fun.

You are fun to work with JD. Thank you!
I am at 3/8" hole 1-1/4 inch deep. The first hole of 5/32" took me an hour, next dozen were a minute each with ample supply of oil -- catching ATF drips on the drill bit made it a perfect setup and go faster.
My friend stopped by last night, a mechanical engineer, he has never seen a circus like mine. His slide hammer had a vise-grip attachment, but there wasn't enough to bite on.
He pretty much agreed with your assessment of situation JD - 100%. 10 out of 10 for weld and pull. In addition, he asked me to rotate the axle from passenger side to check on Jimmy's point, after several rotations both directions, said he can hear circlip moving.
This friend will ask his friend with welding equipment on a truck for a quick stop today. This situation reminds us of true meaning of A friend in need is a friend indeed.
I am not shopping today, it is a clean up day.

Your suggestion of TEKTON slide hammer tool was timely. It provided clues. Thank you.kseyoum wrote:Congratulations! Thanks for the update and conclusion which I was looking forward to...
The original axles with 148,000 miles made noticeable clunk sound at first move, R or D. AFT replacements had mixed reviews.
I took it from cn90's post, then acquired a pair off of a 2007 with 53000 miles (seller claimed). Serviced the outer cv-joints, after installing the clunk has disappeared. Here is the post about axle service https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=62033.

A reminder to us DIYers that there is always a choice.chrism wrote:Good job!
Is it just coincidence that the extracted axle is laying on a newspaper ad for new cars? Hmmmmm.
Thank you ALL!
Added 2qts MOBIL 3309, and now keeping an eye on few drips on garage floor which is NOT consistent, not like each morning.
Here is a photo, red arrows point to older collections, mostly evaporated. New drive axle seal on at driver's side, or overfill?

A quick update...the drip was from ATF overfill little over 400ml.
A bonus, the recent replacement of front spring coil have eliminated the remaining clunk noise at first roll-out, R or D, read post https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=63252
