Using chisel can be serious. Where to go from here?

It broke at the transmission itself "right". Its not the passenger axle broken at the bearing???

Couple of options. Remember that case is not strong against impacts so its better to move on to another solution than pry hard against case.

Remove seal and try to pry gently with nylon/plastic spacer against case. (dangerous)

Tape off the area and drill and tap the shaft so you can pull it.

Weld a bolt so you can pull it.

Tape off and grind in angled cuts then use spacer and pry bar to remove.

Make sure to order your new shaft so you have it when this comes out.
If any heat is used ( welding etc) I would put a new seal in.

Driver's side shaft, the c-clip side.
I have a rebuild pair. Replaced the passenger side yesterday effortlessly. Today was my driver's shaft replacement day. Keeping calm!

Ordered new seals items 46 and 47 in this link http://volvopartslisle.com/assembly/75480512/2001-Volvo-V70-XC/Transmission-Automatic

Using cn90 recommended method for removing seal, it is asking for al lot of force. Not out yet.

Drill and tap is a possibility in the home garage. I could use some insight on using tap -- tools, method etc?

Can you think of a way to utilize this tool: https://www.amazon.com/TEKTON-5632-Hamme ... ide+hammer

It appears to have several connecting pieces.

I've read that you shouldn't pull both axles out at the same time. Does something fall out of place inside the tranny?? I was just wondering if it's possible to remove the opposite axle so that you can drive the broken stub out with a rod and hammer.

No problem to remove them both. The differential set up doesn't allow a rod to pass through the center as the shaft for the spider gears is usually in the way. I found that by looking at parts diagrams but would love a real life photo for the site as getting axles out seems to be an issue for some and that could be a real solution.

I'm so addicted to welding I just weld on a stud and use a slide hammer or puller. I guess you could also cut a thin wall .125 pipe down the middle and use it and some bolts to form a crude vice grip once the seal is out too.
