Have you considered rebuilding the bottom end if the crank journals look ok?

The metal from the failed rod bearings will go past oil filter on cold starts when oil pressure relief bypasses some of the oil. The metal can damage other things.

Nice work. Someone who can pull this off without a manual has turned a wrench once or twice before, I bet. :D

Yes, I'm a mechanic. I work on tractor trailers though. Cars are more of passion for me. I like building them and helping out friends with their cars too.

The replacement motor has arrived. Unfortunately it is from a manual car. I was wondering if any one can tell me a few things. Is there anything special with the flywheels? I 've seen some engine in the past use different weight flywheels depending on wether the engine is internally or externally balanced(ford small block). Should I replace the flywheel bolts? What is the timing belt interval, this is an 08 motor w/55k, is it time?
Bentley publishers outs out terrific manuals for almost any bmw, is there a similar manual I can buy before I get any deeper into this motor. I definitely don't want to do the timing belt if I don't have the info I need to do it properly.
Also, who's Idea was it to design an engine that requires removal of the engine oil pan to access the torque converter bolts. I'm also looking for some info on the oil pan reseal job.

I thought you were actually READING everyone else's posts on this thread :D

If you get a copy of Vida on disc (without the Dice diagnostic tool) that will give you all the info you need. Look on eBay for around $35

The flywheel bolts are recommended to be replaced, however I have always reused with no issues. If not use some sealant like thread tape to avoid leaks.

You can get to the torque converter bolts through the starter hole. I made a lifting eye for the passenger side (piece of angle iron ) that makes the engine hang a lot straighter.
