Theres not alot in my local salvage yards but the darn vehicle is in such good shape Id hate to go squish her. So I guess i'm looking for a simple solution to a different engine.I'm not opposed to a different manufacturer :) Just to tick off any purists. :P (sorry)

Swapping a different make engine in your Volvo will take thousands of dollars and know-how. You'll be better off paying freight for a turbo 2.4 engine.

I'm pretty sure you can without any issues, but my question is: Can the short block of a 1999 V70XC be swapped for the short block on a 1995 850 turbo? I figure that if the head on the 850 was swapped onto the '99' block, it would work in the '95' without any issues.

I think the oil cooler is the only major thing to deal with...99 has the biscuit, 98 and earlier uses the radiator

You will need the water pipe to Cool the biscuit

What abscate said.

to cool the oil, on the 99 short block use either
(a) the 99 oil pan and biscuit and water pipe, or
(b) the 95 oil pan and oil cooler hoses hoses and radiator.
