Those little dings in top of the piston came like that from Sweden last century- don't worry about them

You should NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER use Scotchbrite pads to clean any internal engine part.

Use nylon brushes with cleaning solvent. The Scotbrite pad is NOT for cleaning at all and I should have explained that. The fibres in the pad can find their way in between the rings. It is used to see if a burr exists by having the fibres catch. You could use any cotton cloth to do the same thing.rspi wrote:You should NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER use Scotchbrite pads to clean any internal engine part.

If burrs are there they will rurn into hotspots and may result in piston holes. Running fingers over the valve flycuts can find burrs as well.

Erie didn't have what I need. I googled Clearwater and all i got was Clearwater volvo dealership.Ozark Lee wrote:The Tracy's True Soap writeup on a head gasket will cover about everything you need to do other than the differences on the timing belt tensioner which you are already familiar with.
Volvo 5-cylinder: How to Replace the Head Gasket
I don't know if you have already ordered the head from Erie or not but for about that same money you can get a reconditioned head from Clearwater. Even with a used good head I would want a machine shop to give it a once over and deck it if necessary but with a reconditioned head it is plug and play. Freight does become significant though since you need to return the core to them.

Clearwater is Clearwater Cylinder Heads.
http://www.cylinder-heads.com/
As is the case with all rebuilders they have what they have at any given time. They do seem to do a good job of having most of the whiteblock heads in stock at any given time and I've only heard of a couple of instances where they needed a core up front.

Lee, I think this avenue just saved me about 700 bucks. Clearwater has a total head, cam, and cover for 565 SHIPPED with return shipping included. To go pull one from the yard and have it remand. Would have cost me about the same plus the time to pull it, which I do not have.Ozark Lee wrote:Clearwater is Clearwater Cylinder Heads.

Sorry for the long wait for a post but it's been a hectic week.. Finally dropped the head in on Saturday, finishing everything up today. We had a little confusion with the intake gasket and it not having a hole for the bottom right bolt but it seems like all of the gaskets are that way. Have to do today: cylinder head gasket, putting on the cams, reconnecting the timing belt and odds and ends and seeing if she fires up. This is kind of nerve wracking. Total I'm in is $870, but I still need to buy oil & antifreeze. I'm not sure if I mentioned it but we did have to drill a head bolt out. I have cleaned all the metal out, as I can't find anymore, would it be a good idea to flush the engine out? I have read so many mixed feelings about flushing. I'm ready for all of his to be over with and life to return to normal. Good thing that came out of all of this when I was at the junk yard getting a new timing belt cover I found a mint cd changer and wires all for $20 and my blue leds finally came in for my dash.
All I know is if this ever happens to me again, it's straight to the crusher.
