Hello all, been a while since I had to post. Need some big time help saving my s70 from the crusher.
Monday I was driving along and boom car turns off, look at the tb and call a tow truck. My tensioner was busted. Tuesday bought a tensioner and installed the timing belt back on praying for the best and it sounded like a bunch of angry hungry hippos when it will start. So without pulling the head yet (I need a little help from my dad) I called erie and they have a warrantied head for $425 shipped. There are no machine shops close by that we could find & my dad really wants to replace the head, but we need some guidance.
(Timing belt and the tensioner, water pump, ect. were replaced 62k ago, I'm pissed)
Any advice? Any writeups? What more than the tb and components along with the head should be replaced?
Should I get the 96-99 haynes manual, we already have the 90-98 chiltons. Anything will help us. Thanks!

Due to lack of CVVT on 99 non turbos it's basically an 850 engine apart from the different cam sensor and more modern tensioner for the timing belt. Look in the repair database for the 850 head repair tutorial. It's a very well detailed repair guide covering pretty much everything you might encounter.

You don't say how many miles are on the engine. If is high mileage and has other issues, for not much more money and just a bit more time, you could do a complete engine swap.

You have the mechanical tensioner correct? When you replaced it previously, what brand did you use?

Okay, car has 155k, engine has roughly 90k or so.. First owners had engine replaced because of an oil pump/pressure problem, don't know the details, have no service records for the first 65k of the car. No other issues, no cel no problems until the timing belt. Sometimes I'd get a system too rich code that would reset itself after 3 trips.
Tensioner was replaced with a used oem until we figured out whether or not I bent the valves, and yes mechanical. I am ordering a full tb component kit to install with the head.

The Tracy's True Soap writeup on a head gasket will cover about everything you need to do other than the differences on the timing belt tensioner which you are already familiar with.
Volvo 5-cylinder: How to Replace the Head Gasket
I don't know if you have already ordered the head from Erie or not but for about that same money you can get a reconditioned head from Clearwater. Even with a used good head I would want a machine shop to give it a once over and deck it if necessary but with a reconditioned head it is plug and play. Freight does become significant though since you need to return the core to them.

Erie doesn't sell junk, but a good visual inspection would be a good idea.
I would replace the valve guide seals though.

Tensioner brands vary and the metal for the forks can be weak on some. I noticed this on GMB tensioner. Stick with the INA tensioner if you want OEM performance.

Got the head off yesterday, I have no idea how to show you picks of the head. Valves are shot. My dad went ahead and ordered a head from erie, we had to drill out a stripped bolt from the head. We could not find a 14 mm 1/2" drive 6 point, broke 2 9/16 sockets. 7 hours to get the head off and a lot of cursing.. especially not having a metal db over 1/2in. The head was shot, it was my dad's idea and he's paying for the head so whatever. If I didn't love this car so damn much I would have crushed it at hour 5.
Wish us luck. Ordered the head gasket kit and tb kit today. Does anyone have a pic of normal piston wear? My pistons are not cracked at all but prominent marks from the valves can be seen.
