That is a very dirty air filter Zoll! Everything else looks good. Are your roads very dusty where you live?

Thanks for the valuable comments!

The previous owner was living in a dusty/smogy downtown area. I live in a small town at East, where the air much-much cleaner...

Yes, it's worth to drop the sump, clean the PTC valve and the PVC system replacement looks important tasks.
So, today's completed jobs: cabin filter changement was dead easy, only just couple of torx screws removed.

Another item: the integrated GSM phone system works: mini SIM card inserted and voilá: handsfree phone calls!

Today's jobs were done:

1. Checking the timing belt condition: looks quite new and proper condition, replaced by 40K miles before.

2. Checking of upper PCV hose condition (between the PCV canister and the valve cover): it's almost brand new.

3. Checking if ignition coils: the plastic/rubber parts are in good shape, but some mechanics were working there, 2 of them were replaced some time ago.

4. Checking of oil leaks under the cover: only some signs of improperly filled oil doplets from the oil filler cap.

5. Spark plug replacement: well, these VOLVO plugs were not so nice condition, 2 of them had very worn electrode. Gap were betwee 0.7 and 0.75 mm. Another issue: not all the brand new Bosch Platinum/Super Plus plugs were coreectly gapped to 0.7 mm. Shop vacuum cleaner applied before screwing out the plugs: lot of plastic pieces and a LONG BLONDE HAIRBREADTH found! :-)
Well, after a long test run: no check engine light popped up and also no error messages found by the OBDII/ELM327 reader.

Great work in getting this very pretty car the attention it deserves.

That wiring under the spark plug cover will crack and perish before long if you don't restore the plastic conduit.

I see you like the Bosch brand of parts. Using Hengst oil filter is a wise choice.

Just a cautuon about the WS series Bosch oil filters inserts they have collapsed on both of my cars meaning they may not seat properly against the housing or engine and the most recent one had 2 sizable holes in the filter media after 10,000kms. See my maintenance log entries.

BTW did you know we have maintenance log section here? You can reproduce this thread in point form as a running service history with kms travelled and costs/parts so you can keep an online record of the work done on your car. Brilliant idea!!

Thanks again, Mike! I will look for some heat resistant conduit right now!!!

Hoping your baby survived the leaked oil filter issue! Bosch spareparts have not so good reputation here, their standard spark plugs are not preferred by the local mechanics.

I'm a proud VOLVO owner since only 2 weeks, so several things must be learned. Personal feeling: bulletproof engine design, but each engine has some weak points. That's why I started this thread: all maintenance precautions are very wellcomed!

I can't give you good advices in exchange on this car, only I can share some thematic photo series with SAAB B205 engine and other works and some vintage photo about my retired Bug here: https://picasaweb.google.com/110516400465012658607

The 'Subject' will be used for registration of maintenance works - thx for the good idea, Mike! :-)

Fuel filter job finished: easy DIY, some difficulties around the connector pulling down.
The trick came from this forum: using a gear puller to press both blue plastic buttons well. Only half a liter gasoline has flown out - collected.
Turning on the engine: it was running fine after the 2nd trial.
Have a nice Sunday!

I had the same experience with the yellow box Bosch oil filter. I bought 5, used 2. The other 3 went in the garbage bin.

My car had tape wrapped around connectors, and they were pretty clean upon removal of tape. Learned something from Volvo, electrical tape is fine.

Thanks, draser!

Minor issue happened with me: the red battery pictogram lighted up after starting the car (it was hot, previously was travelling on the highway @ 80 MPH). So I stopped it, restarted and no error message or battery pictogram pop-up (the given error text is German, forgot to making a photo about it). Several times repeated, but no error given, even it didn't throw me error code via the OBDII port (by ELM327 bluetooth reader).

Do I start to worry about the voltage regulator or the battery or some connection failure around the alternator?

EDIT: battery had 12.2V this morning (before firing, staying for an overnight at 5°C / 41°F) and constant 14.1V measured while the engine was idling around 1000 rev (cold engine). Seems to me OK.

EDIT2: charging of the fully warmed up engine at idling by 14.0V - measured at the battery terminals, a/c was on.
