BTW the other clamps have 'ears' that come together when crimped. These are totally different.

That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

Actually, these clamps use the same (standard) Oetiker mechanism, the ears were pinched to cinch them into place.
The interlock notches allow you to set various starting diameters before pinching the ears. The pdf from JDS60R is great, it shows the many variations you might encounter.
Oh i see now, so the second type is a 'variable' diameter type so it will fit more applications without having to buy every single size they make. That makes a lot of sense now, and now i understand these clamps a lot better. Thanks for taking the time to explain all this.
