Post by jtp »

Im referring to the single use crimp clamps Volvo uses as an OE application on a lot of our hoses.

You can get a bunch of assorted sizes as a kit on Amazon and they come with the special tool.

The reason I’m considering it is, now on my third P80, I’ve just never gotten good results from screw clamps. Right now I’ve got minor PS fluid leaks from the Resevoir I did the other day where the hoses mate up. On my last wagon I replaced most of the vac lines and rad hoses and never got all the resulting minor vac leaks and coolant leaks totally eliminated by the time I ditched the car.

Obviously that’s not gonna work, oetikers seem higher quality and more fool proof as long as I pick the right size clamp for the application. Is that accurate?

I used wide Zip Ties in lieu of Oetiker Clamps, good luck so far. Use a Cable Tie Gun to tighten them.

I started using Oetinger clamps about two years ago and have fallen in love all over again, they did solve the PS pump hose seep on my 1999. I still haven't sourced big ones like radiator hoses and turbo induction yet.

Hmmm..a zip tie gun sounds like a nice birthday present for me.

Best use for Oetinger clamps...clamping the neighbor hood kids gingers together so their tool-disabled parents have to call the fire department. When the come looking I'll tell them to watch for that black Volvo that cruises our neighborhood

Are you using the Volvo ABB screw clamps? I love them, they are wide and have curled edges so they don't dig into hoses. I get them from my dealer, standard hose clamps suck. I don't like the Oetiker clamps either, sometimes you don't have access to use the tool.

I agree here that a lot of times there is not enough space for the oetiker clamp tool, which is too bad because they work pretty well.

So far I've been using regular screw clamps for most size hoses, and I have found that it's really important to pick the right size and that they are flexible enough. So far I have not had any problems with them.
The stainless steel ones that FCP sells are really good in that regard and they come in a big variety of sizes. I usually order a bunch of them to have them handy when I need them.

I use Oetiker clamps as I spent the money and bought a tool that can side crimp and end crimp which gives a lot more room to access. Volvo seldom supply the ABB (? not sure that is the brand but it is similar) any more. They sell the standard crap. I have been able to find them at marine suppliers in a variety of sizes, and as we have few of those in the prairies, I found a small local auto supply shop that can order them for me. They are way better than the others out there.

IS there a good source for these other than Volvo dealers?

IS there enough interest to identify the common sizes and do a group buy?

Isn’t the thing with oetikers that they adjust to the crimping aging hose it’s clamping onto. Oetikers is like a “spring” sort of. Leaks develop later than traditional screw clamps.
