If you live in a State with inspection, fix the Parking brake issue.

I last fixed the Parking Brake a few years ago (DIY in forum see link below):
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=54614

Now, the parking brake does not have any effect at all. Cable seems to move.
I am at a point that I gave up on this Parking Brake thing:

- Too labor intensive to replace the cables. I simply don't have time btw work, family, kids stuff, so this parking brake thingy is on the back burner.
- Even when the car is new, the parking brake is pathetic. If the braking power of the car is 10, the parking brake is 1-2. In other words, if it takes the main brake 50 feet to stop the car, it would take the parking brake 500 feet to stop. Go try it on a new car and you will see what I mean.
- In an emergency (total brake failure), a parking brake could help but very little.
- When parking on an incline, I can see it helps the people with A.T. from the loud bang when shifting from Park ---> Drive.
- People with M.T. always put in in 1st or R during parking and this should be sufficient on a flat surface. If your Parking Brake fails, on a slope, think about a brick or wheel chocks.

For now, I am not fixing the Parking Brake thingy because the reward is tiny but the torture is huge.

Sure,

it's not enough resistance to hold the car at all.

Can I ask what brand of parts you used for the cables, parking brake shoes and rear rotors?

The parking brake holds the car in drive, still not in reverse, but will pass inspection so I'll just use a block of wood for good measure when parked front-first in my driveway.

Thanks for the help.

Be very careful with that. I did that exact thing and ended up with a smashed-up exhaust when the car rolled off the driveway after I forgot to put it in gear.

If your car will hold itself in Park, then you'll probably be fine. But the lesson I learned from that is that any regular operation that requires more than one or two steps will be done wrong sooner or later, and if you're relying on that chock it'll be bad news bears.
