Thanks Regent. Much appreciated. I did see another pdf, but it was less detailed. This is the first stumbling block that has knocked me off my game. Maybe because of the consequences. I noticed that there are drilled and tapped holes in the block that I'm assuming were used for the hydraulic tensioner before the switch. The engine serial number is about 200,000 from the switch over so I'm assuming they used the same blocks. The thought did occur to me to put a hydraulic system back on.

Also - I checked http://volvopartslisle.com/ and the part would have been $ 11. less than FCP. That is a significant % savings. Thanks for the heads up.

I hope you don't do that 8)

Savings + POM (peace of mind that is) :D

Ok. So worked on the car yesterday afternoon. I fought with the belt trying to get it on over the water pump and tensioner for forever becoming more and more frustrated. Confidence was waning quickly. Then my wife came out and suggested I ask someone for help and this just might beyond me and it's ok to ask for help. Now I had to figure it out. I stopped, thought about it and kept thinking the belt had to be off by a tooth and noticing it slightly slack around the crankshaft. I had struggled it on 3 times previously only to have to it off again because I was having issues with the tensioner. Then I finally remembered a post by Lee talking about stuffing something against the belt and crankshaft to keep it tight. Once I did that the belt stayed tight between the crank and cam and just slipped onto the waterpump and tensioner. Set the new tensioner going counterclockwise then clockwise with the allen wrench and it worked fine. Spun the crankshaft with the sparkplugs out so the cam wheels revolved 3 times and the marks were good and the tensioner remained set correctly and moved when pressure was applied. Put most of it back together, but it was drizzling and getting dark and I still had to put the accessory belt back on and fill it with coolant. Did not want to do that in the dark without giving the engine a good once over to make sure I did not leave anything off or leave anything in the engine bay that will screw something up. So, the moral of the story is sometimes a little motivation by your wife can get the job done. Now if the car starts and does not explode I'll be really happy.

Good job, keep up your positive thinking and you'll be fine.
And the motivation point is absolutely vital. The last step of the procedure always reads: “Pay yourself for the job well done”
Knowing that your wife gets to spend the money (not the Stealership Manager’s wife) feels really motivating and rewarding

And the correct line is not

"I told you I could do it"

its

"Thanks for the encouragement, where would you like to go out to eat tonight having saved 500-1200 USD?"
