Welcome to the "real" volvo
My xc70 did the same thing--exactly
Finally had it towed (i cried) to an independent who is skilled and volvo awarded.
The battery is the culprit, you cannot charge it connected to the car, the electronic will not permit (somehow) nd the ECM connectors will ned propy cleaned and coated with the special electronic lube.
After years of hit and miss and replacing the cam angle sensor it starts every time like a hot date and runs well
mystery and misery solved 4 me, hope yours is finally just that "easy"
p/s for less than a "grand"

You can charge your car with the battery connected, but only with a trickle charger (2/4A). I have done this multiple times on our 06 XC. I would NEVER charge a car with a regular 6Amp + charger while attached due to the likely potential damage it can cause sensitive electronics.

Top off or trickle is fine In car, but if it has had a deep discharge and the battery has a sulphate mode o would remove battery from the car to charge

Absolutely. Trickle charger will be fooled by all the capacitors a car has.
