Re: 98 V70 NA Synthetic oil change interval
Abscate, I live in SF valley and my job doesn't require me to get on the freeway every day. My commute is 4-miles with 13 stop lights to negotiate along the way. Usually takes me 12 minutes to get to work and the max speed I do is 50. Most days that's all the Volvo sees. That sounds like severe to me. I do make sure I get out on the freeway for a couple of spirited pulls once a week. Currently I drive 8-9k miles per year... That's 3 oil changes, but if I could cut it to 2 that's about $30 in my pocket per year! If you guys think I could do that, please let me know. Sorry about hi jacking the thread 98v70dad...

My point is that you don't have to spend a lot of money to get a good oil filter. I am not advocating the use of a garbage oil filter, just an adequate one. Purolator has been making filters since the beginning of automobiles. They make fine filters. They are more than adequate for the task. I am confident of that.misha wrote:98v70dad....
The point is.....
Why you bother to keep your car in perfect working condition without trouble codes and similiar things when you don't pay attention to a VITAL thing....the engine.?!
Good oil filter is important just like as a good engine oil.One without another, just don't work.
I never asked for anyone's advice about what oil filter to buy. I asked how it is justified to use the same filters for dino oil and change them fairly frequently due to the change interval of 3000-4000 miles compared to synthetic oil changed much less frequently with a change interval of up to 15000 miles. That is the standard industry practice and it doesn't make sense.
Most responses were, use a good filter and then people indicated what they use. Maybe people haven't thought about the issue of a filter staying on the car twice as long with synthetic oil ... don't know.

If your question was can you change oil filter with every other oil change, the question is yes.But....old oil which remained in old filter will degrade new and fresh oil,so we are returning to a begining again.
If you are asking if oil filter can remain on car for 15k miles along with 15k miles oil change interval, then answer is YES.
The point is that everytime you change oil,you MUST replace oil filter. It's not acually a MUST but it's recommended because you are ensured that you will have new and fresh oil in the engine which is not contaminated from a start.
Purolator have a good reputation in Europe and usually it's used in French vehicles.

Yes you can stretch it with two oil changes a year without problems.charleskennedy23 wrote:Abscate, I live in SF valley and my job doesn't require me to get on the freeway every day. Not sure how this got here, but I usually pay about $4.95 for the Mann oil filters. That is cheaper than any other oil filters that I see locally, anywhere.

Assuming everyone knows it, but one point not mentioned in this thread is that Mann makes the Volvo filter that Volvo specified for these engines. They also weigh quite a bit more than a Bosch with a check valve = more materials in a Mann.
$4.99 here and have paid less in a six or ten pack.

Oil, spark plug, and tire brand threads always lead to interesting examples of self expression.

I agree with misha in that when I change the oil, I change the filter. Always.
On the other hand, many of the gearheads on the VS site recommend that if you are going to extend the oil change to 10k etc due to running synthetic with highway miles etc, then change the filter at 5k. In other words, exactly what OP was asking about.

Exactly. I never suggested running a filter for two oil changes. What I asked for the sake of comment and discussion was considering the thought that using an oil filter for extended change intervals of up to 15000 miles is just LIKE doing two or three oil changes at the conventional 3000 or 4000 mile interval without changing the oil filter.
I got a lot of comments about what brand of oil filter I should be using even though this wasn't really requested, but almost none about the very concerning observation that an extended oil interval for synthetic oil will beat the crap out of your filter.
I also got some useful info on what different people would consider a good change interval for Mobile 1 oil in an 18 year old car. That info I asked for and appreciate the feedback.
Just hours after posting this I was at the auto parts store and noticed that they now have Purolator filters "for the extended change intervals common with synthetic oil" These are new. They are sparkly. I have never seen them before. Unfortunately, they didn't have one to fit my car. I wonder how they are different than the others other than the sparkle paint?

I would use pure synthetic and change once a year with that schedule. You aren't in severe use, you are driving at operating temperature at least half of your commute I'm sure.charleskennedy23 wrote:Abscate, I live in SF valley and my job doesn't require me to get on the freeway every day. The sumps on these cars are large which helps too. I change my big sump BMW 12 months/15000 miles btw

Hold on, are you saying that you want to take the oil 10,000 miles but change the oil filter at 5,000?
