Volvo does have a torque value for some of the pipe clamps. It may be the intercooler ones but I can't recall at the moment. I use a 7mm socket and a 1/4" drive wrench as well as various lengths of extenders. The most important thing to me is using good quality clamps like the ABA branded ones.

I do like Oetiker clamps other than you get one shot with them to get it right but they do tend to spread the load more evenly.

Not so great in everyday real world settings. And not re-usable. Might as well use a zip-tie.
In the Northeast, a non SS clamp will become single use pretty quickly. Look at the picture above of ,y lower radiator clamp. That one didn’t respond to either a 7 mm socket nor a screwdriver.

I definitely carry hose clamps in the tool kit for a road repair but when I’m doing a cooling group refresh, it’s oetikers for everything

Turbo induction hoses get the Volvo brand special clamps. These are complex, not just simple band clamps.

IMHO, that picture speaks more to a lack of maintenance than a problem with the clamp design.
I'm under my hood enough that I would have noticed that clamp rusting long long before it got to that state. But it does bring up another advantage to the worm gear type; you can disconnect the band from the gear housing and pass the band around the hose and back into the housing without having to remove the hose to slip it on. So in this case, the old clamp could have been removed and a new clamp installed without ever having to drain / disconnect / refill etc.
Try to learn life's bad lessons vicariously through others.

If you buy harbor fright knockoffs you have to pull the hose. The real oetikers can be installed onto exitsting hoses without removal .

Hi,

Why do you have to pull the hose?
Just wondering what causes this.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

Knockoffs are closed band so you have to pull the hose to slip the clamp over the end. The higher quality ones can be released like a hose clamp, actually easier than a hose clamp, wrapped around , then clamped

The,single use, waste, and the tool requirement are the downsides of oetikers

Hey! I’ve been judged here…

Update. I’ve just refreshed my supply. If anyone wants the set of 42 and 45 oetikers for the main radiator hoses pm me and I’ll usps them to you. You can buy them from Belmetrics, a small order will add $10 shipping

You will have to share your address, ssn, and bank routing numbers with me to get these. I had a much-too-long text stream with someone who wanted SAS diodes but didn’t want to give me their address.
