And what is an octopus hose?
Get your car into the shade , in the garden, then get under the C hood and you will find it.

My kids have to work for theirs too. When my oldest was 16 I offered an 850 I put aside when it was due for a timing belt because I had another to drive. I told him if he wanted a car to drive he could do the job complete with water pump. I came back later that day and it was done.

That looks like hefty design to me, and if it’s made Tom Volvo specs on rubber, that’s should be long lasting.

Formed joints are much more reliable than clamped joints

I’ll defer to a Jimmy but I bet The failure rate on these is low.

Volvo cooling group quality is top notch, as long as you keep cheap parts out of them

I might trust Boeing to make a complex formed pipe like that for the aviation industry. I'm not sure I'd trust OE/third party automotive suppliers to fabricate something like that perfect time after time, day after day, year after year. Vehicle designers should probably shy away from certain material designs regardless how good it might look on paper.

Having worked on many brands of car, always for joy, I have not seen any design issues with Volvos that make them prone to HG failures.

That said, like any car, the system has to be operational. All hoses have to be in proper condition, the radiator cannot leak and the cooling fans have to work. Behind 90% of every head gasket fail - the owner has been topping off the coolant for months. Hello - you got a leak - get it fixed. The other 9.9% are cooling fans that fail, but one usually hears the noise of the fan on its way out. The last .1% are abnormalities.

So to answer your question - why are so many being sold with blown head gaskets. Answer - the owner didn't service their car.

This is it for my daughter's 2007 C70 2.5T. June
This looks similar to a Land Rover hose that was prone to failure on my old disco-2. Actually it wasn't prone to failure it was just the way that the Rover v8 communicated that it was developing a head gasket failure. Such a thoughtful car...
