Grab a hold of the interlock cable with one hand, pull it toward you and hold it. Use the other hand to see if the key will come out.

If you use the 1998 to fix the problem. It would be less work to swap the whole steering column. The column lock is bolted on to the column with shear bolts ( snap-off anti-theft bolts ) . You would need to drill them out to replace the column lock. The column lock cost ~$160.00. Might as well use the good one you have.

As for cannot start. Remove the one screw that holds in the electrical switch. Turn key as far as you can and hold. With the other hand rotate the switch clockwise ( Top toward you ).

Column lock is a frequent failure point on the Nedcar X40 platform.

thanks Rick for the quick response. Question - where is the interlock cable?
Not sure I fully understand your answer.
When using the key, the engine barely turns over. If I jumper the starter motor solenoid it turns over properly. Can also get it to behave if I jumper the engine isolation relay.
Is there a chip in the key?
Not a problem removing the snap off bolts - Have done it before without too much difficulty.
Do you know if the 1998 switch is the same as the 2000 switch?
