One guy Scottish Brick on swedespeed says not so much, pour it in, drive a mile or so, then top up.
Drain the coolant when engine is hot(after driving it a bit)put in new one(do not overfill the expansion tank beyond max mark)start the car,let it idle with cap removed untill coolant tries to escape, put back the cap, idle the engine utill cooling fan turns on,when it turns on,coolant level will drop, top up at the same time as the coolant level is dropping, replace the cap and let it idle untill cooling fan comes on again.
You can rev it a bit to speed up the process.
After the cooling fan turns off, turn the engine off.
Keep additional liter of coolant in the trunk, just in case that in needs to be topped up one more time when cooling system cycles a bit.

Done.

I agree - pour it in, drive a mile or so, then top up.

misha wrote: 25 Jun 2020, 11:33 We also have Volvos in Europe....we have them in the family from '70s....not a single one had rust problems.
Every properly maintained and serviced car will be troublefree.
Do you guys have salt or calcium on the roads due to icey and need to melt it.?

Thanks for the coolant instructions

We had Volvos in Scotland from the 70's. Everyone had rust but we tried to keep on top of it. Worst one was a Dutch built Volvo 340 DL bought in early 80's. Was returned as a lemon after a year due to rust coming out on most panels. Volvos do rust and we had salt and damp wet conditions. Our cars were also never garaged.

Later cars from mid-80's like the 2 litre 360's, 440's (bad electrics and dull), 240's, 740/760's, 940's through to P80's and P2's.
Parents had a 96 850. Sold for scrap about 4 years ago. Rust was coming out of many seams and joints as well as around windows.

Like many cars, if you maintain them and clean the salt off as best you can, they can last a good long time.

300/400 series are not even built in Sweden.
They are far away from Volvo quality, the worst cars under Volvo brand...with Renault engines(340/440) 1.4,1.7 & 1.8.
360/460 had Volvo engines 2.0 but still....they are far away from Volvo.

Same with s,v40('96-'04) only 2.0 petrol engines are from Volvo.
1.6,1.8i from Renault or Mitsubishi (depending on model year)..1.9TD & 1.9dci from Renault.

300/400 & s,v40 rusting out in 10-12years from brand new.
I've seen them with no sills left at all and they were '00-'03.
Disgrace for Volvo in my opinion.

in the coolant procedure you gave , you inititally idle with cap off "until coolant tries to escape" .... by that do you mean you expect to see the coolant heat up then it will want to blow out the top of the return tank while the cap is not on. The cap contains pressure to sustain coolant in liquid form while under increased pressure?

So far no combustion gasses are in the coolant space. So far.

It tries to escape when air bleeding from the system starts.
It's faster procedure and almost no possibility to have trapped air in the system.

It will not blow the cap or tank but can make air pocket in the system.

No CO in coolant space so far.

Its looking like all it needed a competent cap on coolant return.

Who woulda thunk?
