Are you filled with 50/50 coolant mix? Coolant has a high expansion factor - more than water. If you perhaps have more than 50/50 mix, it would need more room to expand. Is the cold (ambient) coolant level at the full level or higher or lower?
Do you have a direct way to measure top radiator hose temperature?

"Blinker fluid" AKA free electrons covers my recent wrestling match with a URO turn signal/corner lamp for my '97 850. A good 45 minutes with a drawer full of tools, and my rusty Model Railroading-level skillset later and it finally went in place and worked.
Back on point, not sure what to make of the OPs comment about the cap seal; every one I've seen has that gasket, as depicted in the pic in the link. How else would this pressurised coolant system work?

But save the heartache, just pop for the OEM stuff, Whiteblocks DO NOT tolerate overheating. don't play Coolant Roulette, as Robert calls it. The plastic quality needs to be there, and the caps do degrade, even green OEM ones. If your old one is 20 years old, how long will a new OEM cap last, 20 years?
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

I have learned a valuable lesson in restoring everything on this car, and what few things that were not OEM that I installed, I ended up going back and installing OEM, I don't wanna have to do major repairs like this again for a long time to come.FLXC90 wrote: ↑19 Aug 2020, 20:25 But save the heartache, just pop for the OEM stuff, Whiteblocks DO NOT tolerate overheating. don't play Coolant Roulette, as Robert calls it. We have sunk probably $2500- $3000 in this car since last September, so almost a year now and we finally get to enjoy it, we just ordered a brand new top which will be a challenge to install but I think we are finally at the point now we can just start enjoying it and hopefully all the hard work and long hours working til midnight will pay off and be rewarding in the long run.
I now have a love for Volvo that I never had before, at least the older ones before the Chinese took them over.

Volvo oem tank or nothing. It was $60 cdn at the dealer prob much cheaper in US, original tank lasted 210,000km and only had a small very slow leak not catastrophic like a cheap one
