Coolant Recovery tank

Post by subzerocarfanatic »

Have any of you had bad experiences with non OEM Volvo overflow tanks, mine is from URO I think, brand new and it has the used original Volvo cap I used off the old recovery tank. It is leaking out of the cap after a drive, I have the cap as tight as it will go. We are going to buy a new OEM cap and tank just wanted to ask first, and the tank is not leaking at t he seem either, it's obvious that it is leaking out from the cap. Are the caps reusable?

URO things are fine unless they touch:

Air, water, windshield washer fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, engine oil , ATF. Gear oil, differential oil, brake fluid, Haldex fluid, blinker fluid, grease, compressed air.

I left off vacuum.

I wonder if it could be the cap itself, they have no rubber gasket on the back side like the oil filler cap does which is surprising considering all that heat and pressure. The cap used on the new EURO tank was the old original Volvo one.

The cap is designed to leak if coolant pressure is too high. Are you sure the engine isn't overheating? The dash temp gauge can lie.

It does not appear to be according to the gauge at least, I replaced the Thermostat, ECT new antifreeze all OEM parts except the coolant recovery tank. How else could I tell on this car if it is, what about checking coolant temp with vida dice hooked up while engine is running, won't it give me real time temp readings
I did ask a while back if it was normal for coolant recovery tank to reach to the top to the point it goes over in to the recovery tank overflow hose and was told by a few on here that was normal, have not checked for that lately since i was told that is normal for the C70

At what temperature does the thermostat open and when is the radiator fan supposed to kick on at what temp? Please let me know if I should not buy a new OEM tank and Cap. When AC is engaged the Rad fan comes on immediately and stays on a few seconds after AC is off, the radiator fan does come on without the AC being on never paid much attention to when since it seems to all be fine.

Sometimes it's not worth the effort to do a bunch of diag. Earlier in the year purchased the cheaper tank for the 03 S80 T6 from FCP and upon pushing the tank into place both clips just snapped. Replace it with Volvo OEM (FCP) and it was much easier to install and plastic much better.

I believe we have 180 F thermostats. As long the needle is in the middle the fan will cycle on and off as needed. Since the fans are working with the AC just watch the needle as it may not cycle till it's hot.

Yes the fan seems to cycle like it is supposed to and the temp needle never gets above half way, just don't understand why coolant is leaking from the cap and I have to figure out why so i know if a new tank and cap will resolve my issue or not.

When it's cold the coolant should be at the seam of the tank and rise when hot (Expansion Tank). If you want just replace the cap first but the mouth of the URO tank may not be flat or have irregularities so the cap is not seating?

Something is not right pertaining to no rubber gasket. It should leak quite a bit without a gasket. FCP picture shows on black gasket. Since I just replaced the S80's radiator cap with a new one I thought I saw a gasket.
