Thank you Lee

I swapped the fuel pump relay from my 94 850( which starts fine ) to my 96 850, nada ! But at least I eliminated that as the problem.

New battery, cranks very well, so now back to the old world

1) spark ? 2 ) fuel ? Think I'll start with fuel

I got all the items listed and even bought a soldering gun and all and I can't get the old capacitors out. I don't know if I have heated the board up too much. The capacitors were pretty darn hot when I gave up. I tried pulling on them while using the soldering gun on the ends and it just pulled off and left the leads. I don't have the money to keep "trying" this and that. I love this site and it has helped me a lot but this one I think is out of my league.
I just found a new relay at PartsGeek for $44.89 total (including shipping). I just hope this works. I've already changed the fuel filter (thanks to this site and the supurb directions) so now I'm sitting at around $100. I guess that's not too bad, but when you are a single woman with some major bills, every penny counts. That's why I'm trying to fix it myself, mechanics are too expensive for me.

I was out shopping on a 100 degree F day in Washington DC. As I left the house, 94 850, 120K, started sluggishly for the first time. Thought the heat may have messed up the choke. I drove 10 miles to a mall, parked under the sun, and returned to a car that clearly wasn't getting any fuel. I opened the cover to the fuel pump in the trunk, and tapped on it as someone else turned over the ignition. No luck.

After a tow home (glad my AAA is current), I was about to order a new fuel pump from FCP Groton when I thought, I should really check Matthews forums. After reading this forum, I pulled the relay, took off the cover, cleaned it, replaced it, and the car started right up and drove a mile without trouble. I'm back now, and about to order a new fuel pump relay, rather than a pump.

Thank you for alerting me to this issue.

Jim

Who makes the fuel relay for Volvo?

Online stores sells mostly Kaehler. Is Kaehler OEM?

My relay is slightly different to the one pictured here, still consisting of the 2 capacitors of same values you show though. My problem is where the 25V 22uF one has a stripe for negative, I am struggling to see which is the negative of the 16V 100uF. Could you possibly point me in the right direction? How did you tell which was the negative of your 16V 100uF?

Pics of my relay here:

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Very resourceful of you to replace the caps in the relay. Most people would just buy a new relay for God knows how much.

I'm 16, I bought a 1996 Volvo 850 after a long summer of ditch digging, as my first car... But now it will not start. At first I assumed it was the battery, which was quite old, so I replaced it. The vehicle would still refuse to start. I checked to see if their was any fuel pressure, none. I immediately got an electrical sensor out, went into the trunk, and tested the fuel pump for electricity, none. I then proceeded to the fuse panel, to see if the fuse had been burned out, nope.. I was pretty destroyed when the mechanic said it would cost $200 just to look at it (I don't have much time to work during school), so I proceeded to google, which is how I found this forum. Question is, before I either repair, or simply order the Relay, am I correct in thinking its the relay, or are their other things I should look at first?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. I'm guessing you've checked the obvious things already (gas in tank). When you turn the key to ignition, do you hear the fuel pump run for ~2-4 seconds and then shut off -- it should.
To check the fuel pump relay, I would jumper it between #15 and #87 and see if the fuel pump runs continuously. If it does, then you can try starting the car.

Yep, its actually the first thing I did, Its got about 1/2 tank in it. The pump used to run when I turned accessory on, but now it does not. I will try jumping it, I'm thinking a thick paper clip will work (Correct?).
