I suppose a vacuum leak or a dirty idle air controller could be to blame. A smoke test would make leaks easier to find. Logically speaking would a fuel pressure issue result in worse performance at higher rpm when the fuel rail is being emptied faster? We are also assuming you have good spark plugs, valves and compression.

Yes it will wreck the gauge, but usually a lot cheaper than buying a proper kit. The type I am talking about is the old school stick style with the metal or plastic rod with the increments on them like these:

Yes, I was wondering about ruining the tire gauge as well - fuel doesn't screw it up?

Yes, I thought of cleaning the IAC again, did that a few years ago. Vacuum leak, always a possibility! Ordered Bosch rotor with my heater core, will install that soon and see if it made a diff at all...

Yes it will ruin the gauge. It is a one shot check to see what pressure you are getting. It is accurate enough to give an idea if your pump is working in the range it should or is running low.

Have you checked all the various vacuum hoses for leaks?

I confess no, because to be honest, I actually don't know which hoses all to check, and with which process/procedure to check them all. Is there a relatively easy to understand answer to this question (for someone who's not a professional mechanic, but understands enough about mechanics to wrench on his own car (such as me ;-))

I used to have same issue in 2012 when i thought it was a good idea to buy aftermarket parts for my petrol engine. Since, i've learned. A lot. Only OEM to me, and like said Misha "Cap & rotor MUST be Bosch...".

Thanks manovlov - installing bosch rotor tomorrow. Cap was bosch already. Were your issues like mine - and resolved with bosch rotor and cap? Or more parts...?

While replacing the leaking heater core, I replaced the aftermarket distributor rotor with a bosch one. The two codes remain ;-(

Curiously, I have by accident discovered that the higher than ~900rpms when idling (at times), can be alleviated instantly by pulling the gas pedal UP with the upper side of my right foot - meaning, the accelerator cable probably needs some grease!

Not knowing exactly how to eliminate any and all vacuum leaks, my next stop is probably the IAC cleaning job - which I've already done once a few years ago. At the time it was gunked up bad.
