I didn't even think to check the gap on the old ones, but I think I'll do that tomorrow!

This weekend, I drove the T5 about 230 miles to Hunter, New York, for a friend's birthday weekend, clocking in at 29 mpg by the time I got home. It would've been higher, except there was a crash on the Thruway that put me on the local roads for much of the drive up there.

Curiously, there were times when the car seemed to really fly while climbing hills at around 70mph and 2,300rpm and getting upward of 40mpg. It was awesome.

Cookeh wrote: 24 Sep 2019, 08:23 Just wondering if a V70 tailgate will be a bolt-on swap, electrics and all, onto my 855? My 855s tailgate has some clearcoat failure, and some rust appearing on the leading edge. I've found a V70 tailgate in the correct colour for significantly less than it would cost me to repair/respray my current tailgate. I did have a search but could only find one post on the matter.

Are the two a straight swap? I know I have to get the bulb failure relay from the V70 too, as the relay for the V70s LED is different to that of the 850s halogen, but beyond that?

Cheers,
The latch MAY be different, but otherwise I'm pretty sure it's all the same. Physically I know for sure it will bolt on.

Thanks. Not overly concerned about the latch, can swap my 850 one on if need be, and I have an abundance of rivnuts if the bolt locations are different. I recall reading somewhere that the glass itself is different, and that somehow affects the heating elements? Any truth to this? I am not sure that source was particularly reliable but there is a surprising lack of info on swapping over what appears to be an identical tailgate.

The latch went through changes , I believe the 1999 was a two year only latch , for instance.

Rolled Elizabeth the T5 to Boston and back, 27 mpg at 65 mph, got back at 0001

I think the '98-2000 latches are the same (at least from what the FCP Euro compatibility list says). The 850 latch may be different though.

I haven't heard about the glass, but that's definitely something worth looking into. I couldn't imagine that it changed all that much, it could probably be modified to work.

Swore at removing the last bolt on the 1998 driver seat in a tight space, with a 14mm hex on a wobble, until I realised it was a manual slide seat and I could just slide it forward to get access.

Yep, been there! I'm used to working on power seats... manual seats are usually easier to work on!

FINALLY did the rear springs and shocks on my 855R. No more shot nivo. Mostly got everything apart easily, getting the ipd HD springs in was a pain

ETA: pretty sure I put one of the coil springs in wrong. On a drive to the grocery had a particularly loud noise going over a bump. One spring looks like it’s hanging up on the lower spring cup edge. Guess I need to jack up the car and try to rotate it a bit.

ETA again: I did put one in wrong. Fixed it, no noise, sits at same height on both sides.

Partially stuck caliper RF on the 96 NA wagon. Some co-workers were driving it all summer, they didn't notice anything but when I drove it yesterday I immediately recognized metal-on-metal. Disc is not flat but not ruined. Factory caliper slide pines were dry but not corroded, I lubed up all four pins and put in some barely-used front pads I picked up on the forum. Beater car is back in business, just in time for fall/winter.
