Actually, I have not removed the module at all yet, just the wire block cluster was removed and put back on again.

After reading all this I was out looking around to see where everything was at under the hood, and I lifted up the black flap and pulled the big wiring plug out, looked at things, and plugged it back in. Like I said, I forgot to pull the fuse first as noted in the instructions.

I'm going to get some silicone RTV and the torx socket and try the repair, but hopfully I didn't screw something else up by not pulling that fuse first.

Sounds like you have a blown fuse. Check your manual and see which one is for your dash lights.

Hi All,

Just to let you know, after reading this article, I have repaired my module on a 2001 V70.

I was getting "Brake Failure Stop Safely ASAP" followed by "STC Service Required" on the in-dash display + the CEL. Now, they've all gone.

Just to help out anyone who needs to do it on the later models, here are a few pointers...

1. Remove the top of the air box and filter, move the lid to one side out of the way, but no need to disconnect from MAF sensor.

2. Remove the bottom of the air box by up clipping the pipe to the side pulling it up sharply. It is held by 3 clips.

3. Remove Fuses 14 & 19 from the fuse box by the air box, both labelled ABS on the chart.

4. Due to the position of the fuse box, you can not disconnect the Data cable until you have removed the Torx screws. The power cable can be, and needs to be unplugged to drop the unit.

5. To remove the 4 Torx screws, you will need a stubby ratchet and a 50mm-ish extension bar as one screw is located directly above the brake lines. My ratchet also had an adjustable angle head which was useful. The other 3 are easy to get without the extension.

6. With the screws out, you can drop and remove the module, and then unplug the Data cable.

I was hoping to use my Apple experience to open the module with the use of the Dremmel. I thought surely, if I can get into an iPod, Mini Mac & iMac, then this should be easy, but that was a no go.

The unit is sealed by silicone in a U shaped channel, so effectively, the top is sealed both inside and out.

After soldering the joints as circled and cleaning out the channel it was time to stick it all back together.

To make a neat job, I wrapped masking tape around the edge of each half, applied liberal amounts of black silicone to the bottom half and placed the top back on. I then smoothed over the joint and removed the tape to leave a neat join. Left it overnight to dry and reinstalled everything the next morning.

The test drive went well. No error messages, and the CEL cleared after a few stop/restarts. Before the repair, I would get the error either as soon as I started the car, or after a few minutes drive. So far, it's been 4 days error free. :D

I just did the repair on a 96 850. Everything went according to plan and my ABS light is now off. I used a torx screw and 10mm nut as an adapter in order to remove the 4 inverse torx screws. Disassembling the box was a pain. I ended up having to break part of it. Once all the large connectors were soldered I used red RTV to reseal the box and reinstall it. It was a relatively easy repair.

Here you can see the orange RTV after reinstalling the box.

I sent my ABS module to Victor for repair and got it back yesterday.
Followed Victors instructions to reinstall it. It was screwed back in place, attached the cables and put the fuse back in.
Following this I drove the car twice, and the lights, ABS, Brake, Service, and Check Engine light all were still on - AND the speedometer and odometer do not function.
I drove to my mechanic and he hooked his computer up to read and clear the codes. With codes cleared, I drove it again and still have ABS, Brake and Service lights ON, and NO speedometer and odometers.

So either I did something else by not pulling the fuse when I first pulled the plugs to the ABS; or victors repair didn't work; or it's something else?
I do know the speedometer and odometer worked prior to me pulling the cables off the ABS module (and forgetting to pull that fuse) and after that....

I would double check fuses and your re-install. If still no-go, then contact Victor to see what he says. This is the fist time I've heard of a Victor repair not working.

I contacted Victor, his response was that that large plug wasn't attached right and I check the fuses. I've checked this and rechecked it, the plug is attached properly and the fuses are all good. I guess my next step to call a volvo dealer to diagnose this and fix it.
I also asked Victor if he guarantees his work, but he didn't answer that.

He does guarantee his work for some time (90 days?) so I would get in touch with him again and send it back if necessary.

That was it!! the large wire connector was the issue, there are locking sliders on either side that were only 2/3 the way down, and once they were pushed into place - presto! it works now. Thanks everyone, thanks Victor!
