Drivers door creaks opening/closing

I've got the door popping problem and my pillar welds are SHOT. (See attached photo...crack is pretty serious and descends down the pillar an inch or more.)

Question is whether "weld-removal / bolt replacement" technique will actually work for me...what do the bolts actually secure or anchor to?

Is my door beyond repair in this method? How about this method?

Do I need to suck it up and go to the body shop?

Tapping a thread throught the spot weld worked for me on my 850 wagon last year before I sold it.

I used 10mm head with 6mm X 1.0 metric thread I think it was.

Don't know if the repair lasted but it looked pretty solid and got rid of that pesky noise whenever I opened the driver's door.
