My dealer (Lawrence Volvo, Walnut Creek, CA) removed this without asking very early on. I only noticed it later when reviewing the service records. Reading your description, I'd say it was removed.

It's a software upgrade. If you have a hard 2nd-3rd shift, it will correct that issue as well.

Had the software upgrade done on mine last week. Made a world of difference. Should be done on every car.

Hi guys. I have a 2001 2.4T v70 (174,000 km) with clunking transmission on downshits but which is usually ok with upshifts when warmed up. I believe the computer upgrade has been done but do not know for sure. I really can't tell. It seems to be in gear at stops, yet there is a bit of a pause without a clunk sometimes with acceleration.... and I like to accelerate...
When work is done on the car , can the new flashing be lost? I had my mechanic do a partial drain and fill to take out the red stuff that had been put in by the mechanic where I'd purchased the car. It was clear, and now its clear with a slight reddish tint as if undrained stuff had blended in. I am planning a complete drain and fill through the cooler lines (no power flush) as my Volvo savy indy mecahnics at Carus Volvo in Missisauga tell me this type of drain is safe and takes about 12 to 13 quarts of the Mobil JWS 3309 which I buy in 5 gallon containers at Canadian Tire for 29 dollars each. Isaac and Matt at Carus have been terrific. THey are on the northwest cornter of Eglington and McLaughlan in Missisauga, 905 712 3700
I have yet to source the dealer of the car and get the records, having bought it used from a dealer who got it at auction. The PCV system was plugged which was replaced (a big job) at no cost by Great Cars, the dealer, but it did not fix the problem. THere is a T hose and a PCV section in the oil pan that can also cause the problem.
I got to find this out because it began to spray oil through the Turbo. The mechanic is going to take it in and fix the PCV issue I am told. I appreciate this. I had also been told when I bought it that the tranny was fine and that Volvo has great trannies with no issues.
I would be thrilled if the fluid fill works for the down clunking, and will try to ascertain whether or not the program upgrade was done. i'll keep you posted.
I must say that but for these issues, I think the car is terrific , great to drive. I hope I can sustain a happy story witih it.
Now about the ECM....er....

No
Any tranny upgrade will stay there until another is downloaded
Doesn't matter what other software is downloaded or adjustments are made to the car

Thanks JRL. I suspected as much. Today the really good indy mechanics at Carus, Missisauga, ON , Matt and Isaac drained all the fluid after my partial drain last time and put in 12 liters or pints. It seems a little smoother though I still get hard shifts. I also noticed a little problem when kicking in the turbo .
Yesterday it looks like the infamous ETM module went. Car lost power and stalled on the busy 401. I had to pump the gas and shift to neutral and hobble off the highway. No fun.

I just did a drain and fill on wifes 2001 V70 T5 with 98k; fluid was very dirty. I had her call local dealer about disabling "stop neutral function" and she was told by service manager they had never heard of such a thing and didn't know what she was talking about. Is there some other name for this update? We live near Knoxville, TN and the local stealership is Clayton. Thanks for all the excellent info!!!
