Update:
I figured out how to run the A3 automatic system test on the tranny, via the posted 850 manuals (there on this site somewhere, b4 anyone asks where did I get it). It was a great help, and it affirmed my fear, kinda. When the system tried to activate the torque converter lock up (now, to be safe, it doesn't say specifically if it activates the lockup solenoid, or the actual torque converter), it tried, then a slight burning smell, barely noticeable, came. Tried it twice to be sure. So, the prob is definitly the lockup, but I'm not sure which is worse; the torque converter ($299 and 7 hrs labor, I can pull it myself) or the solenoid. BTW, PnP switch didn't help a bit, couldn't get to this site b4 I went and replaced it
