Bit of an old thread but I have a question, when replacing this relay, does the amount of swipes when using the washer change? Because it's a huge frustration for me, shortest spray of wiper fluid and I get like 5 swipes minimum. A shorter intervall should result in less swipes, down to as little as one swipe only. That's how I want it to work.

It was the same on my Saab 900 and I replaced that wiper relay with another with adjustable timing, I also put another pump in series with the factory one, a mod I think I should do here too.

The delay relay does not change the number of swipes from pulling the stalk toward you, it only changes the interval between swipes when the wipers are switched on to the "steady-but-intermittent" position.

It won't affect what you're interested in.

I wonder then if the same "99" VW relay would fit in the Volvo... They seem to have the same pinout as the 1HM955531A.

I guess I could always try putting in there and see what happens, though it's a PITA to remove it out of my 900...

Yes - way, way back in the day the whole swap-the-relay-thing started with the 99 relay from VW. It will definitely work and actually has a better delay function, I'd go for that one if you find it cheaply. Used to be a favorite from the junkyard, but they were always gone!
