Hi XHeart, I just did my daughter's axle on her 850. It was a rush job. I got the boot from NAPA and it was excellent. It was as heavy as the original. The replacement boot from Advance was thinner and flimsy. Do not know NAPA mfg, but it was specific for a 850. I have the crimper for the boot clamp if you need to use it.

Just saw the other day that my outer cv boot on passenger side ripped off from the clamp. I didn't notice it last week when i replaced my control arms, sway bar links and outer tie rod ends. Im leaving for a 7 hr trip this weekend and was wondering if it would still be ok to drive with the boot detached like that? I dont hear any noise when i turn from either side so im assuming its still good.

thoughts?

It should be fine for your trip. There is numerous cars driving around with torn boots. Is there enough boot left to reclamp for your trip? When you return pull the axle and follow the boot replacement in this thread.

I know that my daughter drove for at least 6 months with boots torn. I replaced the boots 15 months ago (on Christmas eve) and still no issues. Nice smooth and quiet.

GKN boots are available at Pelican parts for under 15 each. Search by PN 31256231.

For "emergency" or "ghetto" repair until you have time to fix it, some people say:
- Wrap the torn rubber part with a few layers of Duct Tape.
- Go from end to end so you have complete coverage.
- Avoid dirty road (country road)
- Avoid driving in the rain.

This should give enough time until you fix it.

Also, do a google search using key words "CV boot emergency repair".

I would patch it up and drive.

I have done interim boot repair on an 850, using a plastic garbage bag and duct tape. It lasted for a couple months until I pulled the axle. Make sure you leave enough slack for the steering to go in both directions without tearing/stressing your ghetto repair.

GKN/Lobro outer CV boots are $8 each at AutohausAZ.

How would i go about re-clamping it if there is enough to clamp? zip- tie?

Its not cracked from what i can see, just pulled away from the exterior clamp, i can see the moving parts themselves. Not sure if i could duct tape that? Ill play around with it this afternoon and see what happens.

If the boot slipped off the hub I would get another clamp. Stretch boot over the hub and make sure new clamp is in the channel of the hub when you crimp.
