No more vibration...

my 96' 850 was making the horrible vibration 2 weeks ago. I replaced the pads w/ VOLVO pads and it hasn't done it since. I also included the newly designed "anti-squeal" shims. I don't believe it has anything to do with the torque on the lugs because I've never paid attention to it before (I don't own a torque wrench) and I have removed the lugs many times.

VOLVO pads were the solution...I promise! it's worth the 60 buck. They're extremely easy to change too...oh, and don't forget the silicone lubricant.

I can probably say that my car's pads are not Volvo's, unless of course they are dustless pads (my rims look so clean right now :P ). I'll give the OEM pads a try when it comes the time to do the rotors.

I would like to use ceramic (or something dustless), but then again I hate that damn vibration (trade-off)...

Hey,
Where can a fellow Volvo buddy get OEM pads at the lowest price? Any suggestions?

Try FCP Groton (www.fcpgroton.com). I plan to get them there. Make sure you get the rear shims set too.

I bought my 97 850 last August and by October was told it needed new brakes all around...turns out my front rotors/pads were shot and one of the calipers was near the end of it's life. I changed the rotors/pads with new volvo parts and waited to do the calipers this summer. Turns out one of the calipers went bad quickly and grooved one of the new rotors and killed my new volvo pads.

The rear ones were OK last year but had to be replaced about 2 months ago so I opted for volvo pads and brembo rotors.

The symptoms I had with both the front and rear when they were going bad respectively, was a subtle vibration that got worse as you braked to a stop/slow down and ended up spreading to vibrate the whole car.

It happened in October before I changed the front brakes then went away until 2 months ago when the rears went bad and it started again. Went away after I replaced the rear rotors/pads. Started again when the front caliper (passenger side) went bad recently and damaged the rotor and pad. My driver side rotor is also slightly warped now possibly due to the issue with the passenger side caliper (I ended up turning them both, replacing both calipers and pads). The vibration went away after this repair.

FCP Groton has great prices and I bought my re-man calipers, brembo rotors, and pads there (I had previously bought the volvo parts prior to discovering FCP here).

It's advisable to use volvo pads and good quality rotors (volvo or aftermarket)
calipers were going and the rear rotors were shot

So where is a good "how to" resource on changing rotors and pads? I need some pictures if possible. What is the skill level required? Any special tools required? How long should it take? Thanks (I'm tired of the vibration)

97volvo850glt here,

I followed the "Bay13" instructions on Volvospeed plus some feedback here to do the work. It was my first time doing this type of work but my dad helped me out using the instructions.

I also bought the Chilton manual for my car as a backup.

In terms of tools, you just need the standard metric tools including a 10mm deep socket and a 7mm socket or open ended tool for a couple small parts. The rest are assorted sized metric wrenches/tools but nothing "special".

I don't remember all the tools we used but I know I had to run to the store a couple times when I discovered my limited tool box did not have all the metric sizes I needed.

I think Matthew has a sticky on here as well that I looked up.

going to save up some cash to get some slot rotors...for now just going to pump my breaks to ease the vibrations.

Hi,
pull off the front right (passenger) tire, remove the nylon nut at the bottom of the spash shield, and check that motor mount. Mine just broke and the symptoms were exactly what you described. Mine rattled and it felt like it was coming up from the brakes. It would only do it at certian rpms (usually low) while I was braking or when I was stopped with my foot on the brake and the car was in a gear (torque on the drivetrain).

Hope this helps

Just an idea.... My parent's 87 760 Turbo did this same thing back in the early 90's. A violent shake from various speeds that was so bad the shift lever shook.

It ended up being a bad hub assembly. Not sure if this transfers over to the FWD models but I would definitely have the hubs checked out.
