You never answered the question about how far the cams were off when you lined the crankshaft up to its marks. At this point you need to get a hold of a compression gauge (I think The AutoZone, etc stores will rent you one) and get a full set of compression readings on all 5 cylinders. The gauge just screws into the spark plug holes and registers compression pressure as you crank the engine with the starter.

I think I know where this is going but compression readings will tell us more.
