07 S60 Total engine failure?
Re: 07 S60 Total engine failure?
Oil pan doesn"t have a gasket. It just uses silicone. I would replace the rear main seal while your in there. The timing belt should be ok at 55k miles

After reading precopsters post a second time I went out to the oil pan and looked again. I don't have any slots or line of site cut aways in the oil pan. And as viewed from the front of the engine the starter is not at the seven o'clock position. I'm not sure if I still am misunderstanding his description or if it's possible I have something different than he is describing. However there is access once you remove the starter as stated by dsharp above. Anyway, I haven't removed the oil pan from the replacement engine so no harm no foul.

Mike, my apologies. There is indeed a slot cut out for the converter bolts. Found and used, thank you. My brother and I spent some time on friday night installing the engine. We had to swap the automatic flywheel over to the new engine as it was a manual originally. Used loctite thread sealant on the bolts. It went very well, the motor dropped right in, converter fell into position, motor mounts all lined up. Engine is in and all wired up. I still have to change the oil filter and the thermostat, fill with fluids and check operation.
My buddies wife is due back in town soon and he is anxious to pick up the car. I should have it finished tomorrow night. I'll take a few pics and post them up.

Funny, I was looking at that over the weekend as I have an '01 XC engine on a stand and the cutout is at 9 o clock position when looking at the transmission from the engine side. It's big enough for a 1/2 inch drive ratchet so it's pretty visible. I can't count the amount of posters that remove the starter for this.
You get great stability from the cutout as it bolsters the spanner and prevents rounded bolts.
Looks like you've almost got the unit running. Post up next when you have it started.

We started the engine a few days ago. It ran well, but after it warmed up and went into closed loop it would occasionally act like someone hit the throttle while sitting at idle in park. I didn't have an air filter in it at that point though. We shut it down happy that it started and ran, it idled well except the occasional idle fluctuation. I thought it might be due to the air filter missing and it not having ran for an unknown time, I don't know if there is any relearning time as there is for the older bosch systems I'm used to dealing with.
Fast forward to a few days later. New air filter and five gallons of high test. We started it up and same thing, Idle fluctuation but only occasionally( every 20-30 seconds) it would act like some tapped the throttle and then it would return to a proper steady idle. This is only in park at idle at this point, as we have not driven it yet. We hopped in the car and took it for a test drive. Everything was going well and we were about three miles from my house. I took a right hand turn and boom it was like someone threw it in neutral. I looked down at the tach to make sure it was running and gave it a little throttle. No response from the trans. My buddy ran to his house and came back with a tow strap and his truck. While he was jogging back, I let it sit turned off for a while and then started it and tried putting it in drive. It moved the car about ten feet before it started slipping again.
Back at the house I popped the hood and tried to access the tranny dipstick but it was impossible to reach with the air filter housing installed. Pulled the air filter housing and realized I could only check the level with the engine off. So I started looking through the owners manual for transmission fluid level check and it gives me nothing. It won't even show you where the dipstick is. I did pull the stick and the fluid is filthy and smells too. It's full but keep in mind the engine was off, can anyone tell me if you do indeed check the fluid level with the engine off, or do I have rig the airbox and mass air sensor back up and start it. Yes, I know someone told me to service the trans earlier in this thread but my buddy didn't want to as he knew I didn't have to disturb the tranny at all during the install of the engine.
Now on to the search function for "how to check tranny fluid level."

Did you lose some fluid from the rhs shaft? As jimmy said it's a pretty conventional setup except for the nobby dipstick.

That car is a T5 not an R. All 04-07 R's in the US market have a longer nose, KKK24 turbo, and AWD
