For switching to standard heater hoses: just leave the coupler in, but remove all the innards (clips, o-rings and spacers; be sure to get them all). That way, 5/8 heater hose fits semi-snug. If you take out the coupler then there will be a big hole in the firewall. Cut the metal pipes shorter and then use enough hose so that there are no kinks. Use a heavy duty hose so it does not kink.
The no-coupler setup has been posted about quite a few times, if you do some searching you can see the various ways people have solved it.
