It sure is.

I feel your pain Clifford, because this exact same thing happened to me last year. My XC had 132k miles on it at the time

I ended up installing a used engine from Erie Volvo, because I needed to have the car back on the road fast, it's my daily driver. I decided to do that because the car is otherwise in immaculate condition and I bought it to keep it for a long time. If you own the car for say 5-6 years it makes financial sense. If you don't plan to keep it, it doesn't make sense. I'm glad I went this route because the new engine is way better than the old, it has nearly 30k less on it and doesn't use or blow oil. The whole thing cost me $3700 including install and parts.
Just doing the head would have been somewhat cheaper, but I didn't have time to fool around. You need to send the head out to have it machined and stuff, and that takes time.

I have a water pump sitting in my parts bin, not due for another 40k miles or so. I can send if you want to try retiming, new water pump, new belt, then compression test.

If you part the car out, just send it back.

It might be a HEPU brand though.

I have added these experiences and another the VOLVO PARTS sub forum under a subject headed

I have read so many things about needing the cam locking tool to hold the cams (rear), then putting the load on the front of the cam (which I have read you need tools to do), so I'd say it's more than just aligning the marks. I have read a lot about people having the timing off and errors when they do it without the tools and skills. So I'd say NO.

That being said, I have never done a head on a post '98 car.

Without dragging the CVVT issue along here..........Skills are important when doing CVVT engines HOWEVER I've fitted timing belts/water pumps to about 5 of them with no need to lock cams.

You will need a cam locking tool ONLY upon removal of a CVVT hub from a camshaft.

Swedespeed have an excellent YouTube video which demystifies the procedure. You DON'T even need to sight the rear slots. It's just common sense and within the scope of a shadetree mechanic.

So what have you decided to do? Are you just going to lie there and take it or are we gonna fix this motor

Greetings. Located a engine at a local PNPull. I'll give it a look over this week. I haven't given up yet.

The pumps supplied with a Gates or Dayco or Bosch timing belt set are never Hepu or Aisin or even GMB. They are the item in the kit that is the most complex and the easiest to cheapen with low cost bearings you can't see and tolerances that need to be spot-on due to thermal stress.

The idlers and tensioners are usually reasonable quality with these budget sets. Any pump without a brand stamp such as Aisin, Hepu or GMB are a ticking time bomb.......that reminds me I fitted a time bomb to the 2002 XC70 that my wife drives. At present her XC reaches 113degC regularly in mild traffic. I have another WP on the way for replacement shortly.

Greetings. It's been a rough couple of months. Hand , back injury. Rain rain rain. Most of the local parts cars have been actually base model overheats. I just saw an add for a 1999 2.4 LPT head removed for T5 swap. Would this fit my 2000 T5 ? I saw a post that mentioned a difference of the lifters , but can't locate it. If not , would the valves interchange without problem?
I'm determined to open this sucker up and see what's up. The seller is asking $150 , 101,000 miles on donor engine. Local machine shop checkout fee $ 50 ( deducted from rebuild), rebuild labor $225 plus parts.
Thoughts and opinions respected.

My recollection is turbo valves will fit turbo cars, but non-turbo valves into a turbo is bad as they lack sodium cooling. Let a Vexpert ( Volvo expert ) confirm that here please,
