Current stats, average new car owned about seven years, average used car owned 5 years

Average age of cars on road in U.S. Is 11.6 years -all time high.

A 10 year old car is newer than average!!

At 16 years old, my 2001 V70 is just 4 years from classic car status!

Isn't it counted from the end of production, which is 2007?

As an owner of a new Volvo (wife's), I don't want a new Volvo for myself. Maybe I'm already too old (still under 40), but I want a car, not a poorly made motorized iPad.

Oops. In my state any car over 25 years old can get Antique plates. So I have 9 years to go, not 4.

I have read more than one owner who replaced one, then a second failed months later. And you may be unlucky and have it break on the road, quite unpleasant not to mention not safe. Do you have to absolutely replace both at once ? NO. You risk having one spring lower than the other one, but there is absolutely no reason to replace both springs at once. What is really important to replace at all corners on the XC70 is all 4 tires, because of the AWD - but that's another story. To my knowledge, no need to replace anything else (shocks, brackets, etc) but the broken spring. By the way - strut in the front and shock absorber in the rear.

You may type local.google.com and search a garage who does european cars

That said, the rear springs are harder to replace, so more time to do this job.

Speaking of broken springs, almost all on the XC70 I've read about had the front ones break. So do a close inspection for deep rust at all 4 corners.

For us is hard to figure what 'broken at the very broken' really is - maybe a picture? I had front broken springs on a Honda, the very last half coil at the bottom was broken on both sides, never realized until I had to replace the tires.
My wife's 2004 Volvo XC70 L/F coil spring broke about 18 months ago. It was the original spring that came with the car, had over 160k on the odometer. I replaced both front coil springs and everything else while I had her apart. New front struts(Sachs), strut mounts, strut bearings, spring insulators, cross nuts, ect. and also did tie rod ends, sway bar links. LCA's /lower ball joints werre good so I just applied some sylglide to LCA bearings rubber. Any way the coil springs were made by a German manufacturing company that makes them for Volvo, I can't remember the name off hand. So 18 months later the L/F coil spring broke just like first spring. A three inch piece that sits in the lower spring insulator.
