Re: doing a PCV replacement

Post by Antoine240bk »

Done with a clogged PCV! That Banjo bolt was a real pain to get started. I just did not mounted the Throttle unit onto the manifold to have room to start and for a spanner. The manifold bolt near the thermostat housing is quite tuff too!
I did also used the trick with PN/30731007 it worked great!
Still confused by the Banjo bolt, Old one PN/31325709 (17mm) and the New one PN/8653884 (19mm) ?

That is very me when i don't wear my glasses at work. I ordered both and mistaken the Banjo bolts, i realized i've mounted the old version without the check valve! At least i can do that again with a o-ring in place (abscate tips) to make it easier. So not to add confusion, PN/31325709 is the new Banjo Bolt.

Re Banjo bolt...

I wonder if you can do this trick...

- Install new manifold gasket.
- Install ONLY one the upper middle bolts.
This allows the manifold to rotate around the bolt axis. Now tilt the right side of manifold upward a bit to allow installation of the banjo bolt.

What do you guys think?

Another question.

My 2004 V70 with 110K.
The PCV oil trap was replace at Volvo dealer around 2013. Don't know if they addressed the banjo bolt.

Anyway, should I replace the banjo bolt?

Thats a great thought process outside the dodecahedron, to quote a very smart lady.

I had another thought on this.

Mount the banjo and hard coolant pipe on the bench, install manifold, then connect coolant pipes and PCV afterwards.

I dont think that the rotating trick is going to work due to the shortness of the piping.

I was scratching my head with the same question when I purchased my volvo in April 2018. :?: Since I was tracing down the ECM121B DTC (air leakage) I had suspicion the intake manifold, one of the PCV vacuum hoses or banjo bolt was leaking air. The fat elbow hose was leaking oil due to the clamp not being crimped properly.

When I took it apart to clean up the PCV again I only installed a new banjo bolt with new crush washers along with new intake manifold and ETM gaskets. The box and hoses were new so I let those be. Not knowing if the banjo bolt was replaced or not I threw on a new one.

Bonjo is never touched unless needed. I cleaned and reused it in our 2001 V70XC with 190,000 miles, yes with new copper gasket.

It can be a painful and tiresome task unless you take off drive belt and alternator -- very friendly bolts. No loss of time, free of frustration, and joyful. Every thing goes back in nicely, starting with manifold gasket. It is best to float, SEAT, and install manifold w/gasket without restriction. The screws were straight shot, i.e. without wobble attachment on socket.

I removed the throttle unit to have room for the Banjo bolt. It is so close to the alternator too that it's hard to fit a short 17mm wrench.
I already did this twice to clean the throttle and it's not a difficult task to reassemble the unit with the gasket, a long 10mm socket needed. The throttle intake hose have to be pushed all the way down though.

I might leave the one without the check valve (if no risk) until my hands are back under the hood for another work!
