As for the original topic poster, just forget it there is the right and only thing to do, as long as the CV joint 'cup' is in one piece, I wouldn't even bother. Some had a bit of trouble reconnecting the two CV joint parts (may take a bit of force) but other than that a new metal clamp on the boot and you're happy camper

This is yet just another story to remember to always keep and reuse the original securing circlip when swapping out an axle. The exact same thing happened more than once on the P2 S60 & CO.
Yes, that's what I was hoping to do. I have the original M56 axle circlip that I wanted to swap onto this axle, but like I said, I'm just going to leave it there for now. As of today, there is no evidence of a leak.
JimBee wrote: 28 Oct 2018, 12:12 Another cautionary tale that doesn't necessarily speak to the quality of the cv joint—it's the loose fitting circlip that doesn't know it's supposed to contract fully into its groove as it moves into the tapered receiving piece. Instead, it hits the face of the receiving piece that's flat, not getting into (or fully into) the taper.

Some shops will just pound it in, when they feel solid steel resistance. That apparently doesn't constrict the circlip, but distorts it and jams the mangled clip in the axle spline.

When buying a reman axle, if the clip seems loose in its groove pass it by. It should be just standing proud a few millimeters.
Or if you get one and try to install it and you can hear that you're hitting solid steel, that's the reason why. Don't force it.
I think that's what happened on my axle. I really shouldn't have tried to tap it in with the dead blow, but what's done is done. If I ever have an issue with it, I'll pull it and replace it with one that actually fits. I'll be holding on to the OE axle circlip!

I came close to jamming one, which is how I know it can happen. It was an O'Reilly axle, I don't recall the brand. I thought the circlip seemed loose when I bought it, but went ahead anyway. Like I said, it hit solid steel. A local shop manager told me to wail on it and it will go in. I didn't wail on it, but did give it a few firm taps with a heavy hammer. I didn't go in but even with moderate taps it was stuck really tight. I had to get a crows foot pry bar with a long handle to pop it loose.

Autozone had the same thing.

I finally found one at NAPA that seemed right and it slid in and locked without much effort.

That's exactly what happened with my cousin's S70 with an Autozone axle. We had to use a crowfoot pry bar to get it loose. He returned that one and got a reman axle from O'Reilly that slid right in. I wish it was that easy on my R!
I have a NAPA reman passenger side axle in my GLT that's leaked since I put it in. Replaced the axle seal twice before realizing they ground the OD too small when they remanufactured it. I haven't even bothered with it since then, I just top off my ATF monthly. I'd go back and claim my 5 year warranty, but I'm afraid I'm just going to get the same junk. Plus they never have that kind of stuff in stock, I got lucky the day I got it that they had it at the closest NAPA.

I had a good experience installing an Advance Auto driver's side axle in my GLT as well... but it's now got a pinhole leak in the outer boot after maybe 2.5 years in service. I can't remember the brand exactly, it was a brand new one before they were branded as CarQuest. Maybe Tough1.

Somebody on here suggested taking out the stuck axle by removing the one on the opposite side and using a long punch or 1/2" extension and a heavy hammer to knock the stuck one out from the inside out. It might work if you can go straight through one side to the other.

I actually tried that, but there’s a shaft in the way. You can’t actually get anything strong enough through there.

Well, I got the axle out... finally. I decided to give it another go today, and I was able to pop it out just a little bit more with a flat bar. Then after a lot of prying and pulling, I decided to go rent a slide hammer from Autozone. The OEM 27033 slide hammer paired with their FWD CV axle removal attachment (27058) worked wonders! I was able to pop it out in a couple of blows with a little effort. Sometimes you need the right tool for the job, and nothing else will do!

The circlip on the new axle (that I just removed) was definitely larger than the original one, you can see the difference pretty clearly. Unfortunately this axle still won't fit, even with the original Volvo circlip. I ended up getting the original axle socket/inner piece stuck in the transmission when I was test fitting it, but I guess that's okay though, I'll just get the rest of the axle and pack it with fresh grease and a new boot. I can't pry it out enough to get the slide hammer attachment back there, so I might as well just leave it there.
I tried to use the new axle, but the CV joint is bigger, so I can't do anything with it.

Assuming the silver one is the OE Volvo part, then if you also look at the profile of the ring, the edges are rounded but the aftermarket one is flat sided. That would allow it to possibly rotate and dig in. It may have then caused a ridge in the hole in the transmission. Carefully run your finger in that hole and see if you can feel a ridge. Just don't get you r finger stuck in there!!

I felt around and carefully looked at the splines in the transmission, and it appears all is well!
