jimmy57 wrote: 02 Jan 2019, 12:28 They didn't ask me but it seems a better thing to do in the rear bearing saddle area is to take a Dremel or other tool with a burr and grind a groove down the bottom middle. There is a hole in the balance shaft case that goes into the hollow cavity already. If debris blocks the drilled one why have the water go to the mid point of bearing before it can run through the ground reliefs on saddle sides.
Hi Jimmy57,

Following up on this... Having completed this step, I don't think this clearancing is for drainage. The new hole will drain the space nicely. I think this clearancing is to allow the new bearing to slip in a little easier when you press it in. It was pretty tight, even with this done, and I couldn't get it to test-fit without removing this material.

Plus, the material removed does not actually go all the way through to the end. It's just removed where the bearing sits, and the aluminum that the outer race is flush to will still prevent drainage, so I'm certain it's not for drainage.

Cheers!

It's back on the road. Hooray! :D It took a while, primarily because we had a backup car, (it was merely inconvenient, not urgent,) and life gets in the way. All told, it took me 7 months. But that 7 months included new floor throughout the main level of the house, a day job, life with an active daughter, and just not working on it when getting home from work. But it's done!

The biggest problem was that I tore the rear valve cover gasket, and didn't realize it. I had to squeeze it in between the camshaft and the rear wiring loom, and didn't realize I tore it until the first test drive. On that test drive, I lost a quart of oil in 10 miles, all on to the rear exhaust manifold. (Oops.) I had to remove the intake manifold and rear valve cover to discover exactly what I had screwed up, then wait for parts (again) before getting it re-assembled a second time.

I'll post more details in the next couple of days, but I thought I'd share the good word that it's running again. And yes, I missed the V-8!

Here's the list of parts that I ended up buying for the balance shaft bearing replacement. It's a word doc, because I couldn't paste from Excel and have it formatted reasonably nicely. Altogether $1,195 in parts.
There were a number of parts that I bought above and beyond what was minimally required for the work. They replaced wear items that were reasonable to replace while I had it all apart and they were easy. They were:

Water pump (with 140k on it)
Upper/Lower Radiator Hoses (140k on them)
Fuel Injector Seals (140k on them)
Aux belt and idlers (with 35k on them)
Spark plugs (had 35k miles on them)
Front main crankshaft seal

I ended up replacing the rear valve cover gasket twice, because I managed to tear it when squeezing it under the wire loom. I was more careful the second time around!

Great info, thanks for posting that list! I'm going to need to take care of the timing cover gasket on my mom's V8 soon, and I want to replace everything I can while I'm in there. At 153k miles, most anything in that area is due for replacement anyway.

Hi, i was wondering if you could help me find this ground's home: It's the one that lands on the right strut tower under the power steering and coolant reservoirs.

How's the timing cover gasket? If you're going that far, you might as well do the timing cover as well, including the front crankshaft seal.

What year is your mom's V8? 2005 was the bad year for the balance shaft bearing, and supposed to be fixed 2006 and later. But if you're in there that far, it's worth at least planning to shine a light down at the back of the bearing and inspecting. Having done it once, I'm a little cynical about the back bearing lasting "forever", although people don't complain about it, so maybe it does. But I'd at least look. If your mom's engine IS a 2005, you should seriously consider "drilling the hole" if you're in there that far.

Feel free to ping me if you have specific questions. Email is best, as sometimes it's intermittent when I'm online.
