Well, -1C/31F today but sunny and clear - so I launched the cylinder head project today.

If early on is any indicator, I cracked the manifold to turbo exhaust bolts, then unscrewed them with my fingers. With no PBB. Nothing. Are these things tungsten?

Couldn’t get head off today before winter deluge hit, expecting about 15 cm snow

I got all four exhaust manifold to turbocharger bolts off but the flange angles up, so head won’t come off that.

I’m 4 hours in total at this point. Working a bit slower due to temps and logistics in driveway

I am very impressed. My low temperature outdoor work limit is about 50 F.

Yesterday was easier. I warmed up the engine to drain the oil and after about 15 minutes the engine compartment was nice and warm to work on.

Bit nastier today, but alright for two hours

Looks like the poor dear will be wrapped in a gentle cocoon of white stuff tomorrow. Pretty astonishing progress given the arena you're playing in. And True Grit for pressing on with the fix once you made the decision. Hope it doesn't look too hateful once the pistons are uncovered.

Usually after a dump, we get a few days of clear skies and sunshine. In the sun, I find it’s nice to work outside even in the cold!

If I can stay on track, it will be about 10 hours all in , not bad at all. Added benefit, access to do the rack will be a lot easier!

Snow Not too bad....
