Am new to the forum. Great stuff in here! My question concerns the OBD discussion. I just stopped driving a 1990 740GL which had this system. I searched around the net 6 years ago when I acquired the car, and found an outfit "Alldata" that has subcriptions for tech. specs on a lot of vehicles, including a lot of Volvos.
Having just pruchased a 1997 960 wagon, I have been trying to figure out the OBD for this car. It does not have the same black box with the pin and led that the older volvo has. It appears to me to have a connection for the code readers like GM and Ford use in the center consel. If this is the case, then I assume I'm going to have to acquire a code reader. And I'm guessing it's OBDII being a 1997?
Alldata seems confused about this vehicle. They told me to subscribe to a 1998 V90 and it would be the same. Can't imagine!
Anyway, thanks for any help. Again, GREAT SITE!

If somebody could post a pic of where the Diagnostic box is on the 940 I would appreciate it. I can't find it.

Hi bill. My husband found the unit. Took cover off. When he was pluging in the selector cable into the slot he noticed the conector in the box was loose.. he said it didn't look right. Anyways when he started to do the procedure to get codes. It never showed any lights. Except the light when you push the button.. no other lights. No codes. He pushed it twice and we did hear the different systems I guess goin thru the checks? Like the fuel pumps turning on and off and so on.. so how or what do we have to fix to be able to get those codes ? Or get it workin correctly to get codes? 240 dl 89 automatic 2.3 jetronic. Thankyou

can someone Please help. Codes
113
311
and the most mysterious 322.. Brand new MAf and still having this code.. reset, pulled battery. Google says burn off wire (white) is bad, this says hot.. both wires have good connection from ECU to MAF ... I am lost
FYI: 1991 Volvo 240 DL
I did change the cluster so I am guessing that's throwing the speedo code but could a bad ECU cause 322 code?

All the documentation that I can find for a 1997 Volvo 960 shows an under-the-dash LED Unit and/or a Transmission Control Module (TCM) to the right of the steering column under the dashboard.
My 1997 Volvo 960 has neither. It does have an Electronic Control Module (ECM) inside the firewall under the dash, and an OBDII connector to the right of the emergency brake handle.
I cannot find any documentation for this configuration. What I really need is the correct schematics (with the proper wire color codes).
I would appreciate any information and/or suggestions you might have.
Thanks.

All cars built since January 1, 1996 have OBD-II systems. Manufacturers started incorporating OBD-II in various models as early as 1994.joe cool wrote:My 1997 Volvo 960...I would appreciate any information
Free OBD-II Check, at most auto supply stores. Or, one can buy an unit, but I'd make sure an auto supply store's will work first.
Service Manager Bulletin 23-34 - VOLVO Volvo Cars of North America, Inc.

Subject: OBDII Readiness Codes Check During State I/M Program
Applicability: 1996 Model Year Volvo 850 Turbo 1996 & 1997 Model Year Volvo 960
Volvo OBD-2 compatibility list - for all after 1996 models
I saw the URL listing for OBD II diagnostic tools for after 1996 model year, but my 960 happens to be a 1996, so where do I go?
Also, what kind of tool is the DICE which people talk about? Is it a Volvo version of the OBD II?
