Finally took this to my mechanic. Compression test reveals 160 on all but #2, where it's 50. He then did a wet test, by spraying some sealing oil in there and re-tested the compression of that cylinder, and it jumped up by 10. He deducts that the valves in that cylinder are burnt. Total cost to fix $2680, which includes $700 machining the head at a contracted machine shop. He cautioned that driving it longer may damage the catalytic converter. I only paid $2800 for this car 11 years ago! ;-)

Any opinions are most helpful!

Pull the fuel injector wire of #2 to prevent fuel from going in. You won’t be able to smog it but it will be driveable around town.

10 hours, $1500 labor
Parts plus machine shop bill $700 a little pricy but not crazy

Thank you abscate. Mechanic reckoned 1700 for labor. He's usually on the less expensive side, charged me $600 for replacing radiator and main thermostat recently .

Pulling wire to #2 won't affect driving negatively? (

Gas mileage had taken a hit since this issue showed up)

Sorry for my poor formatting. Meant to ask if there are downsides to driving with one injector disabled? In reading about that online, some people report worse performance. Any experience with this would be greatly appreciated.

I'll prolly have my mechanic do the job. He can't take it for another three weeks, so I plan on driving it still.

It's too bad I won't pass smog, as the car actually runs great - with the ONLY issue being a slight tugging/chugging when in gear and letting go of the brake, in idle. The moment I hit like 1200 rpm or higher, the car runs like a charm.

Performance will be decreased, the engine will misfire on that cylinder but disabling the injector on a cyl.with almost none compression will prevent the engine oil to be thinned with fuel and will protect the engine from further damage.

Thanks to misha and abscate for their expertise.

Runs much rougher with injector on burnt-valve cylinder removed. Seems like even at 55psi, that cylinder fires some....?

My shop will do the valve job in a week.

Updating you nice fellows. Got the car back after 4.5 weeks in the shop. Small shop, covid outages, etc.
All put back together, it runs smoother than I ever recall. The engine is calm as a rock at idle, and stays calm as it revs up
Several internal parts fell apart as they did the job, so there were additional parts needed, crankcase breather hose, new headbolt set, etc. All said and done, it put me $2900 back.
Haven't driven long enough to check gas mileage. It had been on the low side with the burnt valve. Pic attached fyi.
