can anyone please tell me how to source an entire new dashboard panel or console or whatever this whole assembly thing is called. there are so many links on how to fix it that I can't find one on how to buy it. I am now reasonably terrified that I'm going to spend all weekend taking the dashboard apart just to find that it needs to be replaced and it's going to be either impossible to find our way too expensive. but as it stands now I can't even Google the part there is so much noise out there.

You can usually find an exploded view to choose your part from. A site like this vendor from the top of the page. This view came up right away.
I just want to say, it likely would be expensive to buy new. I've aquired most of my parts from a local pick and pull.

yes, therein lies the problem. I'm trying to find an aftermarket or used source and when you google instrument panel all you get is a bunch of gauge clusters. if you google dash panel all you get is the top pad. I have to say, as a long time volvo fan and multiple Volvo owner, I feel down right betrayed by this problem.

If you find a used one, odds are pretty good you'll see (at a minimum) hairline cracks and need to fix the tabs before you install it. Since you'll be performing the same exact steps, it's just as easy to pull the dash and repair the one you have - and much cheaper. Plus, have you ever transported a dash? Those things are huge!

If you can afford a new one, odds are pretty good you don't have to worry about fixing your old car, you can just replace the whole thing! :)

very funny ...I just bought this 1 because I thought it was the best car I could afford to buy with cash but now it seems like it's going to what about 1000 bucks a month just to stay on the road. that's the thing about this dashboard problem is that there are so many other things that continuously pop up as I am sure you know, and it does make the idea of replacing it with a new part pretty ridiculous from a cost benefit standpoint. but this car only has 78,000 miles on it and even though I have only owned it a couple of weeks now I already have too much money into it to ever really think about selling it. so the only thing left to do is try to make it last forever and give it to my son when he goes to high school, he is 3 now. so, in summation, I guess I would have to say that I am just as lost now as I was earlier and will probably remain that way for some time to come.

there is 1 on eBay right now if anyone other than me is interested. the guy refuses to take any close up shots of the plastic around the clips so just based on the price of shipping for the return if it needed to be returned that puts me out.

Wheeler000,

This problem isn't really due to a faulty design but rather a problem due to the methods and materials used in the manufacturing process. Volvo wanted to be "Green" in every step of manufacturing and they developed materials made to minimize so called "greenhouse gases". I suppose it was a great marketing campaign and everyone leaving the plant at Gothenburg could feel good about themselves but the sad reality is that we wound up with unstable plastics and adhesives that don't stick.

As you have learned, there is no after market supplier. If you could get the dash from the dealer (which is doubtful) it would likely cost more than you paid for the car. This leaves you with two options, repair the dash that you have or try to find a good used dash. Even if you do find a good used dash, it to will eventually suffer the same fate as the dash that you have now.

One other side note, this is not a text messaging center. Please refrain from using "texting" style shorthand (1 for the word one, etc.) and use proper capitalization. It will make your messages much more readable.

Firstly, let me say that I apologize for my text style messaging. I use my smartphone to communicate on the site and many areas of my keyboard have dead spots which lead me to using the voice text function. Second, I would like to point out my personal believe that choice of materials is an intricate part of design and not some unrelated artifact. Now to the matter at hand:
Either my dash only makes that banging sound once the car has warmed up, which would probably require a whole new thread, or tightening those four bolts was successful. I think the sound was the plastic cover up next to the windshield striking the windshield so that when those bolts were tightened it stopped the dashboard from moving enough to stop the plastic cover from striking the windshield. Even the railroad tracks were not effective in interrupting my silence. So, after talking to Volvo and the government and maybe even a lawyer or two, more for the sake of all of us than for me, it turns out my dashboard mount may not even have been broken; knock on wood. I'll let you all know how it goes. Now, who do I talk to about these door panels?
