Re: My 1st P2 (XC70) Project impossible?
Cleaned and refilled the angle gear with synthetic gear oil today. It was amazing what crud (coagulated oil deposits) came out of the housing when I hit it with a solvent. Only 100,000 miles and the fluid was close to black!!

I started a thread on how the transmission repair is going so far: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 99#p316499
Candidates for lack of reverse are S4 (solenoid 4) and a cracked rear drum; though the solenoid is looking more like the source of the problem at the moment. Valve body will receive a Transgo kit (still in Memphis TN after 8 days in transit from CA !! )

How was CAM locked for the timing belt job Mike?
Any tips for this procedure?

I've done 3 of these timing belts on B5244T3s now and haven't locked any of them. If you go over the mark with the VVT sprocket you just wind back anti clockwise until you feel it reach a resistance point then a little further back, perhaps 10 degrees then clockwise again until you feel resistance then clockwise further until the mark lines up.
The timing point on the VVT sprocket is very close to the top of one or more cam lobes so it very easily goes further with only a little force. It can be frustrating without a locking tool however it's achievable. Volvospeed1 have a Youtube video on the procedure called CVVT Removal and Setup with an engine on a stand so it's easy to follow.

I was hands-on with our '97 850 timing belt job using IPD's cam-lock tool to overcome fear, hence would take this on.precopster wrote:I've done 3 of these timing belts on B5244T3s now and haven't locked any of them. Mine is identical engine with single VVT.
It appears, your crank pulley was not taken off for the removal and install of the belt.
Was it easy to maneuver the belt off through the narrow passage?

I always remove the crank pulley on the later engines as I have a really good air wrench. I pretty much follow FCP's YouTube video for belt replacement with Jay. I used the Volvospeed1 video when the CVVT pulley went over the timing marks. Notice in my pic there are 17 teeth between timing marks on the cam sprockets. That's a golden number!!
It's not impossible without an air wrench; just fiddly and I don't want to get grease on the new belt.

Engine is in and I'm just repairing an ETM to mate with it. I had a transmission to engine mating problem where the torque converter protruded too much and didn't allow the engine to turn. Solved that and now I need a new battery after having mine sit around for way to long.
I rewrapped the entire engine loom in 5mm, 7mm and 10mm split tubing.

Finally connected all intercooler pipes and fitted ETM and started engine this morning.
Neutral and Park no longer load the engine down and Drive moves forward. Reverse is now here however it shudders upon take-off and needs about 1,200 rpms before engagement. The tailshaft is not connected to the angle gear however I now fear the transmission has issues with Reverse though it can be moved albeit with judders.
Transmission is overfilled with fluid. Hopefully releasing some fluid will sort the judders in reverse.
