Just picked up my '01 XC70 with 96k miles and Geartronic last night. Will work through a range of issues and hopefully post up all the relevant info on the repairs in this post
Repairs to do over the next couple of months:
* Restore power to cigarette lighter, CCM (climate control module) and radio backlight
*Brake Pad replacement
* Replace a faulty valve body in the original transmission
* Replace control arms, spring seats and other worn suspension components
* Replace conduit on engine loom
* Perform ETM refurbishment with a Sacer sensor
* Repair a rear vision mirror courtesy light that stays on and drains the battery
* Repair oil leaks at the sump mounted oil cooler.
Current drivability issues:
* Drives well with partial throttle but breaks down at anything over half throttle and goes into limp home mode
* Changes all gears really well in Drive but loads down the engine when in Neutral, Reverse and Park, no reverse

ETM from a 2000 S70 with updated software installed today with Sacer sensor. New gasket also. The original ETM hadn't been updated so I did a swapover from my stock rather than a rebuild to save time. Replaced a bunch of conduit to the wiring leading to the intercooler plumbing. I also disconnected the fuse to the passenger door as the courtesy light relay for the door mirror seems fried as I can hear it sometimes flickering in the door and then the lamp stays on, flattening the battery.
Also replaced the cigarette lighter fuse and the console and rear console outlets now work.
I didn't get around to starting it as the battery was strangely flat again. Battery is on charge overnight. Have to do some testing for current drain in the morning.

Guess my curiosity got the better of me and I headed outside again to restart her at 11pm.
At first it was a little shaky and I had to reset ETM codes a couple of times. The brake pedal position sensor is still lighting up on Vida so I'll need to order one. The idle is 640rpm....seems a little low???
The annoying feature of not being able to give throttle while pressing the brake pedal has disappeared. Don't know if this is due to the ETMs newer programming or if the refurbishment of the ETM is the cause.
Got limp home mode because I forgot to connect the cooling fan plug.......these cars are very smart.
MAF readings started at around 14kg/hr at idle then shot up to 18kg/hr then 21kg/hr after another start. I have a spare new Bosch MAF number 0280218108 and will fit this tomorrow morning. Hopefully this will give more stable readings.
Even though the CCM is faulty or not getting power I was able to get the A/C compressor to fire through Vida and the system's current pressure is about 25psi which may be low so a regas may be needed.

Removed the brake pedal position switch. Remembered to let all the vacuum out by repeatedly pressing the brake pedal. This stops the O ring from being sucked back into the booster. The position switch is held in place by a simple spring steel ring that is flicked out of a recess with jeweller's screwdrivers (don't worry about losing it as it's captive)
It was difficult to remove all the sealant but after 15 minutes I gave the connector a pull and cracked it. Later I repaired it with my iron. Once it was out I soldered the terminal back onto the board and a little way down the brass plated track. Then I repaired the broken connector as best I could. I used plumber's sealant around the sensor.
Checked the impedance with a DVM and it ranged from 3.5K ohms to a near short if memory serves right.
Sealed it back up again and cleared the previous ETM codes and ECM codes with Vida.
The occasional hesitation and hiccuping seems to be gone. The reduced performance message has gone as well as brake pedal position code and an ETM code I think it was 904D and all seems good.
Also replaced the MAF sensor and readings became far more stable at around 17kg/hr at idle without much variation.
I think I know now why the idle is low. The trans is loading the engine even when in Park. When I rev the engine it's as though I'm accelerating the car over a brick.

The early models of 5 speed autobox fitted (UK) 99 and 00 had a feature where the box would drop in to neutral when the car was stationary and the footbrake applied, when you released the footbrake it would go back in to gear (my 00 phase one still does this and it works well). There was a software modification introduced to remove the auto neutral feature to get around the box banging in to drive. Some later models never had the auto Neutral feature, my wife has an 01 V40 with the five speed autobox fitted and that doesn't go in to Neutral like my V70 when stationaty on the brakes.
It could be your car was supplied after Volvo made the decision to remove the auto neutral feature, neither of my cars have low idle speeds, my V70 idles at 850 RPM in gear or neutral - Mike

Thanks Mike I had this on my 2000 5 speed auto V70 and had it removed at the dealer
Totally different fault to this gearbox. This car edges forward in neutral and has no reverse. I suspect valve body failure; fluid is black and worth a try to replace.

If the fluid is that bad a flush and the addition of a MagnaFine filter to the return line might not be a bad idea, after that if it is still playing up consider removing the solenoid valves and opening them up to clean them before resealing and refitting, it is surprising how much crud builds up in these when the fluid is bad - Mike

Great topic, thanks for putting your photos and text up for us to follow along, precopster.
For North Americans, stop-neutral transmission uh, feature, was on 2001 and 2002 models in the Volvo P2 family, but not S80 AFAIK. Like precopster did, you get it removed via VIDA software update at the dealer, or at an independent mechanic with VIDA (rare).mikealder wrote:The early models of 5 speed autobox fitted (UK) 99 and 00 had a feature where the box would drop in to neutral when the car was stationary and the footbrake applied, when you released the footbrake it would go back in to gear (my 00 phase one still does this and it works well).
