I wouldn't mind repairing other stuff, but this sounds a little too complicated to do the odometer repair!
I may have something on that in the next few days.

On 1995 and earlier, you can read the ECU mileage from the diagnostic port as follows:

1. Select module A terminal 7
2. Switch ignition on
3. Push button 5 times
4. When LED comes on and stays on, enter code 1-1-1 as follows:
- press the button once when LED is still on
- wait for LED to go out and come on again
- press the button once when LED is still on
- wait for LED to go out and come on again
- press the button once when LED is still on
- read off response, which will be the last three digits of the odometer miles
5. Repeat steps #3-4, but enter code 1-1-2 (that is, press the button twice on the last step); read off the response, which will be the first three digits of the odometer miles. If you have less than 100,000 miles, the first digit will read as 10 blinks.

Hi guys, I am having the same issue...how to find out the mileage from the OBD II....I took it to my local mechanic and although he could read the codes he did not know how to read the mileage. Neither did a mechanic who specializes in "foreign" cars, nor my Volvo dealership. The dealership told me that they could not retrieve that info on older than '98 model OBD II's. If anyone can tell me how to read the codes it would be very much appreciated! I have no problem fixing the odometer, the tutorial is great and I already have the gears....just would like to be able to set the mileage correctly.....Thanks!

ERO1 (and others), did you figure out a way to get the mileage from the OBD-II ECU?

Check this thread as Jimmy57 has the procedure and the tech at my Volvo dealer said that is correct......I did finally find a dealer who could do it for a nominal fee...not many out there.... Good Luck!

i tried this in my 93 5speed 850 and it said there was 157 miles less on the cluster then on the ECU 320K. maybe it broke at one point? lol, my 94 turbo says 190k but ecu says 193k. i bought the 94 from a younger volvo tech so maybe he replaced the gear. also i had that ecu tuned and i used it in my old 95 850 turbo while i was making upgrades to the 94, so maybe thats where some of the miles came from. I cannot get an accurate reading on my T5R wagon. i know the odo was broken on it from the previous owner. odo says 138k he said about 180k actual. i put 3k on the car since ive had it and i just got a possible 184k from the ecu. wich would have ment 181k when i got it so pretty close.

Just to clear up any confusion, mileage is stored in the cluster itself not the engine ECU on ME4.3 and ME4.4 cars. When you use the OBD I under hood connector and read mileage it is communicating with the instrument cluster.

I've read and watched a lot of threads on retrieving the mileage on these cars and there is a consistent theme in that usually the stored or retrieved mileage is usually higher than what the odometer indicates, usually by a few hundred miles. I have even noticed that after 1k miles the mechanical odo and the electronic odo on the trip computer are usually off a tenth or so; I'm sure that'd add up over time.

oh ok, i was under the impression that it was stored in the ecu. so im gussing in that case that my 94 turbo must have been broken at some point breifly.

Yes this seems to work just fine. My odometer has been inop since 99,000 and I salvaged a used odometer with 124,500 on it and now I know my vehicle currently has 123,891....too close to worry about changing! Thanks for the tip.
