Several of us have bought these eBay cores in the past few months and been satisfied.

If you buy one of the cores manufactured EXACTLY as the OEM core, you will receive a core with the same design shortcomings, i.e., they all leak in the same place where the plastic joins the metal. The SCP sold on eBay is a revised design that I am convinced is superior. However, some Volvo OEM cores (wherever they were made) have lasted 20 years. Others of the same original design fail after only two or three.

I don't think spending more guarantees that you will get a better or longer-lasting core, though this is definitely true of certain other parts for these cars.

I wasn't trying to make a point about OEM vs aftermarket quality, or which one is better when it comes to the heater core. I was only stating that the one being sold on Ebay might not be a real SCP product, but I had forgotten about the US based SCP, though I did see Robert's youtube clip from when he visited there long time ago. It might well be the one from the US company sold on Ebay (I haven't emailed them to ask).

I only looked into it because I know the heater core in my car is original, manufactured in Dec '95 or earlier, and since I'm based in Europe, it might've been more economic sound for me to buy directly from SCP in The Netherlands, rather than paying for shipping from US. Seeing as it isn't, I'll probably go a completely different route and buy a NRF (www.nrf.eu) heater core, as I was simply blown away by their easy-fit radiator I installed last summer. Plug'n'Play to the fullest.

Has anyone bought the SCP heater core within the last 12 months and experienced the smell/odor reported by the others?

The ebay price is now $30 with free shipping - wondering if the quality is still the same.

Today, I installed an ebay "swedish" heater core today in my '99 s70, 93k miles. The "smell" from oil or whatever coats it is there for now, but it's better than breathing coolant. I ran out of time this morning, so I only sprayed it with vinegar-water then warm rinsed. It did help a little, but an overnight soak or dishwasher is the way to go if you have a sensitive nose.

We hit -40 last week - No complaints.

That's the magic temperature where Ms Celcius and Mr Fahrenheit give up their fight over their units and just agree that's it's f-cold. Lord Kelvin, however, insists its a heatwave....

The upside is that some time in -40
makes -20 feel like a walk on the beach!
