Those three parts all come together at the turbo exhaust flange, a cast iron piece the size of a softball with three holes in it. A lot of people think of it as part of the turbo but it's not.

One hole for connecting to the turbo, held together by a V-band clamp, no gasket.
One hole connects to the exhaust manifold, held together by four studs with nuts, with gasket.
One hole for connecting the down pipe, held together by three studs with nuts, with gasket.

There are three different kinds of turbo exhaust flanges over the P80 years, and they are all completely interchangeable to the various factory turbos. The difference is where the flange connects to the down pipe, they are all exactly the same where the flange connects to the turbo and to the exhaust manifold. The three types are conical, straight or angled flange, in chronological order. Your 98 V70 came from the factory with a straight turbo exhaust flange. Make sure the down pipe matches the flange type.

Erik, thanks. I will have to check all that out.

My main thing now is to fix this. I just drove to the store and there is defe a smell in the car.

I know when I find it, it will be an easy fix , but I have to go thru this step by step.

And the wagon is running well. Shifts smooth and good pull from the turbo.

Thanks again for spelling out all the connections.

Oh! And the exhaust pipe outlet has a black soot in there....that wipes off. Almost like a diesel. Is that a tell tale sign? Maybe need a tune up or an injector is dumping?

Thanks again, I want to daily this wagon, as I went back to school, l lost my job with the covid shutdowns. Defe want to make this run right!

Oh! Someone mentioned the timing belt, it's was down about 70k miles ago. And seeing that this year 98 was very conservative on the timing belt change, and the next year 99 and up was 105 k interval , I'm gonna run it for a while.

I gotta check I though I saw a few bolts here, where there is supposed to be studs.
Again, thanks for the details!

Ok so I have to get a straight flange downpipe.

Hey Erik! Any suggestions on getting a downpipe? Got any links? I think I may pickup that exhaust manifold.

And will the downpipe give me any performance? Aka larger downpipe that flows better?

And.....the midpipe , any ideas on where to buy that, and can I get it without the cat, aka a straight pipe?

Ya know, for "off-road testing". Lol 🥳☺️🤣

What are the hexagonal shaped things around the threads on the manifold?

I’ve never seen those before.

Hahaha yeah....they look kinda like they are made the stuff from deeez

Deeeeeeez nutssss! Hahahhaa

Just kidding, I hate it when I fall into that joke. Lol.

Yeah, they look new. The gaskets I got came with new hardware as well, I have not gotten them installed yet.

So what are you saying, should I tighten those up? I havent got a wrench on them yet. And, maybe the gasket just needs to be changed...

Ok, I think after much reading I have to replace the pcv system. Maybe that is what I am smelling, and the exhaust does seem to be all together.

So, on to the pcv replacement!

Thanks for a the help here.

I will start another thread. Glad to be part of this community! Thank you!
