Looking at 98 V70 GLT turbo wagon....

Hey everyone.


This one has high miles, over 225k

The door locks are intermittent.

Any thing else I should look over when considering this for purchase?

Seems to drive straight, shifts great in sport mode, in econ mode not so much.

What are the weak spots of this year and model, and what have you guys seen needs attention?

Any parts of the vehicle to consider as weak point and pay attention to?

High miles, 230k miles

Sticky door locks and any way to loosen them up?

You will have to wait for the early p80 guys to,chime in on the specials of the 1993

Definitely do the glove test to evaluate the PCV.

Is it being sold by a fastidious owner with a thick folder of maintenance receipts, or a regular person who just changes the oil and calls it good enough?

Plan on it needing a timing belt & water pump, PCV service, heater core, and every single rubber hose on the car replaced (most critically the turbo coolant lines) MINIMUM. At that point you will definitely want to do the transmission drain/fill procedure as it’s probably never been done and the transmission may die if you let it go.

I just bought a ‘98 GLT with similar mileage and it needed all that in addition to suspension on all four corners, new MAF sensor, cam seals, engine mounts, subframe bushings, O2 sensors, more I’m probably forgetting...

Point being that even the most well-maintained P80 is due for some maintenance at that point to be good for the next 200k. I bought mine for $1500 and have about twice that into getting all of the services caught up (doing the work myself) but now the car needs nothing.

When did you get yours? How long ago...sometime in 2020?

And what caused you to replace all the rubber hoses. Just preventative or was she showing symptoms?

98' is a great year to buy, if not the best imho. No ETM failure headaches, no canbus nonsense. Slickdizzy is spot on and his opinion reflects my experience with these.
You may want to up the number of expected repairs though. I just went through a 99' S70 and brought it up to speed, but it cost me close around $2500. And I did all the work myself.
This brings up a point, are you planning on doing the work yourself?

It sounds like the PO took care of the car in question. That's a great starting point. Cars with early LPT engines are awesome to drive, lots of fun.

I bought mine three months ago.

Typically this is the point at which you need to do all of the hoses because they will be falling apart if they haven’t been replaced before. Rubber degrades and oxidizes with age and these cars are approaching 25 years old. So in a sense, it’s both preventative and necessary.

My turbo coolant hoses were swollen and on the verge of exploding, and those are a common cause of blown head gaskets on these cars, so that was an absolute necessity. The rest of the hoses were just crumbling into dust and many had splits due to age, causing vacuum and EVAP leaks all over the car.

I agree with the prior poster, I have about $3000 into my $1500 car, but I also upgraded many parts “while I was in there” with the goal of shooting for 400k. The LPT cars are generally my favorite P80s due to their blend of torque and power (though I do still miss my 855R).

The transmissions are very hardy, it probably just needs a fluid change as mentioned. I agree with others that a 98 FWD is the best year/model combination. And the LPT is fun to drive.

Ok cool that all sounds great! Btw , what is LPT? is that the number designation for the motor?

It is a turbo, correct? and has how many hp? I can't figure out the wiki chart!

Also, the speedometer doesn't work, so miles are unlimited, but is that an easy fix?

I am going back to look at it today and do the glove test, good to hear that these items are mostly just maintenance and refresh of old decaying parts.

And yes, I will be doing the work myself.
