Between the drivers side arm hitting the edge of the hood, and the passengers side park position being so high above the cowl that it was never out of sight, I switched to Dodge Shadow wipers. I remember having to do some minor modification on the drivers side, and I use two different size blades. Since most of my driving is obviously with the wipers off, the passengers side always sticking up there bothered me.
Disappearing wipers had been around for years, so I don't see how that got by the designers at Volvo. The car look way better from inside or out with them hidden.
A "REAL" fix for the 850 wiper arms

I read your comment about that, but I have never seen a Dodge Shadow
Wikipedia says it was called a Chrysler ES in Europe, but I can't find any wiper arms for that. It is even older than the 850ies, and I have never seen one.
Unless some newer models also use them - like this? https://www.ebay.at/itm/395732106129
I'd need some partnumber to look for that.

Yes, not easy to find anymore. And I don't know if aftermarket is any help. They were early to mid 90's over here.
Something else I should probably keep an eye out for when picking around in the yards. They must have been used on other cars, as I can't see them having a special wiper arm made for a budget car.

The V70 arms are NOT a drop in replacement. End of story.
No matter if you swap them side-to-side or how or far down you force then the drivers will always hit the hood. Even adjusting the hood to its highest level does not prevent contact of the drivers side wiper arm at the near vertical position.
The only real solution is to grind back the stops of the stock wiper arm.

I found a new 850 wiper arm (9151087) at Voluparts and installed that last summer... looks great and works great for now. I know I'll have to grind back the stops and/or bend the arm in the future.

All three of my 850s are wearing 70 series passenger side arms on the drivers side. Seem to work fine.SCJ wrote: ↑06 Feb 2025, 16:02 The V70 arms are NOT a drop in replacement. End of story.

Robert has a video showing his bench vise bending process which also seems to help.

I bought a Volvo branded and a no name wiper arm (driver side) through Skandix and this fixed the problem on both cars, probably for a few years.
Aftermarket seems very similar, if not identic.
If you want to keep the arms from bending in the future, unload them by lifting the wipers off the windshield while parked in your garage.

I bought Pro-Parts Sweden replacements through Rockauto for both sides of my 850. They're not perfect, but they work. I do have the issue of the driver's side wiper blade doesn't flop over like it should on the up stroke. It gets chiseled into the glass. I'm not sure if that's the fault of the arm, or the wiper blade itself.
The difference between my old 99 S70 wiper system and the 850 is amazing. The 99 worked so well, and the 96 is adequate at best. Usually the washer nozzles get mentioned at this point, as a response, but it's more than that. EVERYTHING about the 99 wiper system worked better.
