Defeating the torque limit request on the Volvo 850 Turbo

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

ARD-Lucky wrote:For those really interested I can turn off the torque limitation in auto trans ECU's if you like... however once you drive an ECU with this turned off you might change your mind. I know I did.

The car becomes very jumpy to throttle input and wheel spin is a serious issues with this turned off.
Perhaps the OP would be interested in doing a before and after write up? I'd donate the tuning at no cost :)

So I'm assuming that there's no hope or possibility for just a decreased 1st gear torque limitation?? :| This would make me a happy camper, and as tempting as it is to simply have that 1st gear limit deleted, from the sound of it I don't think I'd enjoy the constant tire spinning. Is it d*mn near impossible to accelerate from a stop without breaking traction with this limit deleted?

We'll have a write up with vids on this shortly from another member I'm working with. I think that will help explain it better than anything :)

When I had 94-98 850 and s/v70 company cars on which I did the signal interrupt, I had to ease into the throttle on a speedy take off or I'd get straight line wheel spin. The more onerous problem was driving normally and pulling into the street from parking lots. The unloading of the inside front wheel would allow normal throttle application to break traction.
I had a couple of manual trans models and they have no torque limiting and it was not an issue with those. The torque amplification via torque converter was greater than I ever anticipated.

Sounds like the defeat causes embarrassing situations in parking lots and low speed stuff.

I think this would be something you'd want a dash switch for, which leads us back to Jimmy's 1990s physical mod... help, I want to get off this ride!

Or...

Lucky, can Arduino boards or Raspberri Pi's talk to (your ARD, flashed) ECUs? Can you defeat this in realtime, given a cabin interface?

Im curious if rather than a simple on/off style switch if you could splice in a variable switch, like what light dimmers use. This way maybe you could control the level of 1st gear torque between stock and complete tire roasting

That would be great, but only works if it allows variable input. My guess from what I know about ~1995 auto technology, is that it's a bit field, meaning on or off.

Lucky will know...
