Hello ALL,
After owning Volvos for 20 some years, I recently started to do small repairs myself. Our 1997 850 NON-TURBO a/t is nearing 120K, and transmission fluid matches coffee, hence, I ask:
1) would this D&F procedure apply to 1997 850 FWD AW50-42?
2) will I need to a new seal for the drain plug when putting it back together?
3) is freezing Midwest weather a bad time for D&F procedure?
Many thanks!

I found answers to my question in this thread. Thanks.
Haynes repair manual for 850 suggests ATF change every 60,000 miles. It is a positive to see so many variables between volvo dealers and the DIY folks here? Are we an R&D lab for the manufactureres? There ought to a genuine concern at VOLVO than simple profit or screw the owners.

I started changing AFT MOBIL 3309 in both cars. 1st D&F was completed last week. The 2nd D&F coming this Friday 30th.
A follow up look underneath 1997 Volvo 850, there is no drip, fluid level is study, but few question with photos. TIA

Pictures after 2nd D&F on 2001 V70XC.
while looking for any leak...
This looks unusual, does it need replacing? what?
Many thanks!

Thank you for this post. I recently purchased a 2001 V70 and noticed some issues with the transmission (hard shifts, flaring). I searched and found this forum and the information has been invaluable. I was able to determine using the tests listed here that the software update to fix the stop/neutral issue had been applied. I completed two rounds of drain and fill this morning, and the car drives almost like a new car.
I had to register on this forum just to post a thank you. Thank you so much!

Thank you for the step by step. I followed it and I did not do all 12 quarts. I did 7. The fluid that I removed did not look like it had been changed in ages. As I drive the car more the shift quality improves. Time will tell. The car has over 220xxx miles on it.

Hi xHeart,
From your "pictures with questions"
I just replaced my transmission mount. I couldn't tell from having it on how loose it was, so if you want you could just remove it and check. It's dead simple, as the mount doesn't actually hold anything up so you don't need to support something while doing it. There is always a pretty good chance when removing it you'll break the last little bit of rubber that was holding it together of course, so approach with caution!
The new mount was also pretty floppy (based on what I imagined), although not remotely as bad as my old one (02 S60 111K miles). Thus I doubt I would have known if the mount was good/bad without having a new one anyway, at which point I would just install it
I'm curious about all that black leaking caked-on oil, as mine looks the same, or maybe a little worse. No fluids are down and the leak seems to be coming from up higher and just collecting there. Does your car have a turbo (mine does)? That was my only guess so far: Although I haven't ever done work under the skid plate until now, so I don't know how long this has been going on for.

coflynn, your above two post are enticing for MVS DIYers. It is assuring. I will take on the transmission mount task next along with transmission cooler connectors and seals.
I use power washer around the house to clean up. Wish there was a power washer to cleanup stuff sticking to leaks, hoses and clamps.

I did the adaption today as well from within VIDA. I used the "control adaption", no need to reset the entire thing out. The adaption procedure made a huge difference in shift quality.
It has even seemed to eliminate the N-R shift delay/harsh shift I was getting. The N-D shift didn't seem to adapt completely (orange triangle never flashed), however I was able to "force" it to adapt pretty well by waiting for a very good shift & turning off the car without touching the shifter, which seemed to have stored the settings used for the last shift. So far the N-D shift delay/harsh shift isn't noticeable, but it may come back!
